Catherine de Medici

A memorable turn from the actress, but does anyone better versed in 16th century French history than me know if she was as...well, kooky as that? All obsessed with astrology and whatnot? I know reading the stars was a more respectable science back then but she seemed to take it a bit too far if the film was anything to go by.

Yes, Catherine was very interested by astrology... but not more or less than anyone during this century and it had strictly nothing to do with weird beliefs. This century has known the very famous Nostradamus whose life is tightly linked to Catherine. In the movie, this is a shame that she's only shown this way, because she appears like a superstitious woman while astrology was far from superstition as we understand it now (as you rightly said). Her so strong Italian accent is also weird and laughable, unfortunately. Catherine was half French and this is something many people forget to stress on her Italian heritage (often to denigrate her).
I'm no "fan" of her, she, in my opinion, made big mistakes that have, for example, endangered the politics of her son, Henri III, but her image in the movie is pitiful...
