It's hard to identify with an eternal loser.
Sam and Jerry would be happy a lot. They could shrug and say So what? I'm still in charge.
Somehow he seemed okay being a loser on the Mad About You show. But then I stopped watching that one after a couple episodes. Too painful to see him get beat up by family and friends.

Wasn't Archie Bunker an eternal loser?
The difference with those shows was the writing and chemistry the the cast.

I only watched a couple of Bunkers, but mainly because it showcased bigotry, exploited it really (did NOT ridicule it). But I did watch The Jeffersons, because they could have a good time a lot.
