this show is absolutely brutal. There has not been one funny thing in the first episode, perfect couples blows this show out of the water and that is saying a lot. What is the point of this show? Washed up comedian hosts a s*** game show? Please NBC cancel.
Definitely feels like a Curb ripoff, which was a Seinfeld ripoff. But at least Larry David is funny and a talented writer.
I know it's meant be dry as dirt but this was not funny. I won't give up yet, but I need to laugh a few times. This isn't a show that needs to feel so improvised. It's on NBC, it has a budget.
I too have seen every episode of Curb and I love it. I also loved Mad About You and I have the DVDs. This... was pretty painful to watch. That said, many shows have shown significant improvement by their 2nd episode, as they work out the kinks from the pilot, so I am willing to give it 1 more chance, because I do like Paul.
"Who are you, and how did you get in here?" "I'm the locksmith... and I'm the locksmith."
Only saw a couple of Curbs, and of course there's a similarity to both that and Seinfeld. So what? We can't figure out why everyone says this show sucked so badly. There were funny, enjoyable moments and after ep 2 we were fine with it in the Thursday lineup & surprised to see it was cancelled.
All the networks have given worse shows a lot more time to try and find their stride, and killed better shows that just needed a different time slot. This one could have stood a tweak or two but it definitely deserved more than two eps to catch its stride. Especially if the alternative is having to watch Office and Parks and Rec repeats.
Too male-oriented (and unfunny) for my taste. Bring back Perfect Couples, NBC. It isn't great but it leaves this for dead. I didn't like Curb Your Enthusiasm either.
Yeah this show was pretty bad. The only saving grace was Larry david playing Larry David. In the first minute of the show you could see it was going to be a Curb ripoff and I was just thinking why would they ever even try to make a duplicate of that great show. There is a reason it was on for so many years and it would be too difficult to even try to make a better version of Curb while it is still on the air. I'm not sure what NBC was thinking but I guess we they will have another chance with a new show next season cause this on isn't going to make it!
Other than the one person in this thread who found it "really good", I agree with all the other comments. It was seriously, and surprisingly, bad. I went in wanting to like it, but it was simply, utterly, terrible.
There's no flow to the show and no chemistry between the actors. Maybe, given enough episodes, it could get better...but it's not going to be given that chance.
All we saw was the pilot. Pilots are often not that great in comparison to the whole series; they have to establish the characters, plot, etc.
And, I thought it was kind of cute. It wasn't awesome but it wasn't "brutal". You say you prefer perfect couples, which pretty much destroys your argument anyway because no one with any sense could stand that show.
I think everyone should give it at least a couple more episodes (especially those of you who love Reiser or Curb...) before blasting the show.
EDIT: Ok, you're right. This is terrible. I didn't think the pilot was that bad; I figured maybe it was just slow getting started. Wow, I couldn't even get through last week's episode. It is terrible, brutal, not funny, still not worse than perfect couples but bad none the less. This cannot last much longer...
I enjoyed the pilot to Seinfeld, Friends, Frasier, Will & Grace, Just Shoot Me, Arrested Development, The Office, etc... You're supposed to like the pilot. That is what's supposed to draw you in to the second episode. I'm not even going to give this show a second chance. I fear that my IQ will drop from viewing it.
"Books and movies are apples and oranges. They're both delicious, but they don't taste the same."
This show reminds me a bit of "Men of a Certain Age". However the cast has far less chemistry, which makes a lot of scenes feel awkward and forced. The only interesting characters so far are Habib and Larry David.
The only way this could be funny is if he wakes up with Helen Hunt, tells her he had a strange dream, and Bob Newhart walks in and asks him to tell him about it.
