Talk about a cast with no diversity...

Wow...Went through all the cast photos displaying 15 or so actors and didn't see a single ounce of diversity...What kind of neighborhood is this?

Yeah it's mostly whites but gated communities irl are. There are 3 black actors I can think of, and Leah and Sara are hispanic (half at least).

I have family in Virginia who live in an extremely upscale neighborhood with the houses costing at LEAST half a million dollars and the neighbor hood is pretty diverse. Our neighbors are Indian, a black family lives 3 houses down, and an Asian family lives across the street.

The neighborhood is predominantly white but there is still diversity.

You'd think even in a one-race cast like this with more than 15 actors featured in each episode and along with numerous families that fit into the storyline they would at least cast the token minority girl/guy.

I might still watch the show simply because I'm a big fan of Rhona Mitra. But I hope she moves on to other work soon.

Well let's see there are 3 Black actors (Peg, Mia and Coach Ross), an Hispanic (Sara) and Indian (Leigh) actress. But there is no diversity? What do you want? I'd consider that diverse.

Do they actually have lines? Or character development? Or is this a "Friends" thing where they just throw in a minority character "just because" that serves no purpose?

Glad you liked it. :P

Well OP-ole campainger for diversity-I'll bet your family's "gated community" doesn't have witches, werewolves, and vampires now does it? So you really can't say it's diverse! lol!

Haha I wish!

Yes, they do.

I already admitted I didn't watch the show but I was interested in it because it featured Rhona Mitra.

As many of the threads and posts have already mentioned it doesn't look like the show is going to last much longer but the show still seems rather interesting.

Rhona Mitra is great as Claire on The Gates.
You can watch all of the episodes on ABC.com if you want to catch up.

reply

Have you (OP too) seen The Life Of David Gale that Rhona was in? Great movie.

Yes.
Rhona had a small appearance but she had a big impact on what happened in the movie. Her character was not very nice...

Yea, I live in a gated community, huge, its like 99% white and I also went to a private school, I had one black girl, 2 aisians, the rest white in my grade. I think this is a pretty accurate representaion of how these communities really are.

And there are 3 black characters, Leigh, Sarah, Vanessa, Claire looks a lil ethnic, the cheif looks Italian

It's not too bad considering the actual demographics of upper scale suburbs

plus you have to factor in the demographics for the people actually watching this show, which is not highly diverse

and why is it people only seem to have a problem and call out racsist when the african american characters don't get enough spotlight. There are no Aisan or Middle Eastern characters on the show, but no one seems to care about that. Plus white is such a general term, I doubt every white character on this show is the same exact race, there are many nations that are considered white and why shouldn't they be represented as well, especially when in real life these stats are true. The US is only 10% African American and yet there is this need to give them 50% of the population representaion on shows and movies when Hispanics, Aisans, and Middle Eastern's don't get any attention. I don't have a problem at all with giving any race attention, but I just hate when one race complains when they are getting way more attention than most of the other races.

And don't even get me started on the lack of gay characters, i have no sympathy for African American's feeling attention starved when 90% of the men watching this show are gay and get no charcter to connect with at all

my rant is done, sorry if got too intense

I love the show and sadly it seems every show I love dies young. Paul Blackthorne (Christian) is cursed. Every show he's in gets canceled after thirteen episodes. I could say something similar of Robert Wolfe, the man who wrote last night's episode but I'm really starting to love this show.

These days people complain if there aren't one of each nationality and whites of European decent aren't the minority. Hollywood is actually bending over backwards at times because of all the complaints and they are desperate to gain a bigger hispanic share. Fear the Walking Dead has sucked from day one, I keep trying to ignore it but there's nothing else on. They actually do part of each episode in Spanish to pander to that ethnic group. It's annoying because my Spanish sucks, my French is better and it sucks, and most of the time they don't bother with subtitles so there's part of the show I don't know what's being said. They were so desperate to appeal that that demographic they moved the story to Mexico where as we were told it was set in LA. The show doesn't suck because of the hispanic pandering it sucks because it's about a bunch of whiny yuppies trying to vegan their way through the zombie apocalypse. The most annoying character being the drug addict son. I keep hoping he gets eaten, along with the rest of the cast, so of course they make the mid season premiere all about him. Other than a couple of cable shows pretty much all TV sucks now. I guess I'll finally throw in the towel with HBO in a couple of years since they are determined to cancel Game of Thrones and all their other scripted shows suck. I've been mad at HBO since they canceled Carnivale after two seasons. It was possibly the best thing ever produced for television but it was too intelligent for the Bud crowd so it had to go.

My only wish is that they would have more scenes w/Peg and her daughter Megan. I think there conversations about The Gate would be very interesting. I like Peg a lot, but we need more scenes Megan interacting w/the other kids at school, or maybe Megan can be the one to help Charlie move away from Andie..I just want a sl w/Megan and Peg involved completely..jmo

Peg's daughter's name is Mia and you are in luck because she will have more screen time in the next episode.

I study in communications and and mass media along with scriptwriting and directing, it is a known fact that people who watch an ABC dramas are vastly white females 18-35, hince why most of the characters on this show are white females. Any show you watch, whatever ratio of race and age the characters are is amlost equal ratio to the viewers, so if a show has a mainly white female cast, most of its viewers are white females, you don't have to have a degree to figure this out.

And it is also not very difficult to figure out the demographics of men that watch this show. It is a known fact that most of the men that watched Buffy, Angel, Charmed, and The Vampire Diaries are a high percenatge of gay, actually over 90% so I am probally undersetimating the percentage, also when you count in the the desperacte housewives viewers that were acttracted by the marketing of the show, it is very obvious that an overwhelming amount of the men that watch this show are gay, its very very obvious

and its good to hear that Mia is getting some screentime, and Peg is gonna have major screentime come the end of the season, I guarantee you that she will be the one to take out Devon

Somebody's always gotta bitch. Wouldn't be surprised if there's an old thread or two on the Lost board complaining for too few black people or not enough Jews or something.

reply

I sometimes wonder if the people who complain just troll the boards, browse through a few pictures and than make comments or declarations just because it's the internet and they can

reply

This thread is a year old but yeah I'm going to confirm what you said about the trolls. Any topic that begins with "Not enough minorities..." usually has no bearing.

Has anyone ever thought that maybe the characters are acted out with the actors that best played the role no matter what color or race or whatever they are? Or is that too fair for you?

Quite frankly I think all the actors are brilliant on this show. The only person I can't stand is the succubus. I find her very annoying and her character a bit unbelievable.

reply

lots of communities are mostly white. Newport Beach, CA is 98% white. Seacliff at San Francisco is also mostly white with a small asian and black minority.

reply

Pegg is black, Coach is black, Andie's BFF is black, Leigh is Indian, Rhona Mitra is 1/2 indian. Sarah is part Mexican.

reply

Leigh is Indian, I wasn't quite sure what her race was, and didn't know that about Rhona either, see, just because someone is not of obvious african or aisain decent doesn't mean they are white either, good for them

reply

I took your guys advice and ended up watching the show.

It was actually pretty good. I just finished episode 1, the pilot, and I usually hate pilots.

I'm definitely hooked for more. It's a shame I hear it might get canceled. I would have began watching the show from the beginning if I had seen some diversity on the poster...

Someone lied about the episodes being on ABC though...I don't see them anywhere.

The lack of eskimos is what really ticked me off. Such obvious racism.

It bothered me more that the show is entirely about blandly attractive upper class douchebags and their bland upper class douchebag problems amidst their privileged lifestyle in a gated-community... and that the 'monsters' want nothing more than to be just as boring as the 'normal' folks.
All their homes look like they were decorated off the same damn catalog page.

Meanwhile, the only characters who come in from the 'outside' (Christian and Amanda) are portrayed as being dangerous psychos who need to be destroyed.

The real lack of diversity here is cultural/political.
