Matthew Lillard

I wonder, is Matthew Lillard taking over the voice work for Shaggy? I know Casey Kasem is getting up there in years (was kind of surprised to see him still doing the voice in the last slew of movies), so maybe he decided to retire. Anyone know? Lillard seems to be the perfect person to take over (IMO, he was the best thing about the live action movies).

Yeah, read about Kasem retiring on another site. Still, Lillard is a good replacement.

Matthew has said in a recent interview to Moviegoer that he has been working on quite a few projects recently for the big screen, TV, and improv groups, but really wants to comeback to mainstream cinema again like he was in Scream and Scooby Doo, among many others movies. He's recently also directing and producing movies, voice acting for anime... So he's been busy in all sorts of projects, maybe not mainstream big budget movies, but he's still an actor with a career. Although he admits he feels he's kind of in a weird place in his career and in his life (since he's already almost 40.)

Not that he's old by any means, but portraying Shaggy once more in a live action film maybe a bit off, although he admits that his kids would love to see him star in a 3rd Scooby film. Reuniting the rest of the cast seems even less likely, as they're already signed on to other projects and well, they'd be 30-somethings playing a couple of teenagers... Even Freddie Prinze Jr. said in an interview that even though he loves Scooby Doo, he only signed for two films, and he'd liked to move on to other projects.

I don't know, but I think a well-produced, big budget Scooby film may revamp their careers, but that's just me.

Anyways, Matthew has been officially cast as the voice of Shaggy for the upcoming new Scooby Doo series, which will air hopefully sometime in 2010. Talk about amazing! Matthew Lillard was destined to play Shaggy! He'll obviously keep the Scooby legacy alive by playing such an important character as a cartoon and in live action! That's something not many actors have accomplished, and voice-actors even lesser so. And then a character so popular and well known as Shaggy... WOW!

I'm really happy to hear this, because Matthew's portrayal as Shaggy in the live action films was just superb, and he really knows how to do Shaggy's particular voice down to a T. He'll be replacing legendary DJ Casey Kasem, who has been doing Shaggy's voice pretty consistently since 1969 to 2009, almost 40 years! Obviously, he's also been voiced by other actors briefly, like Scott Innes. But I'm sure Matthew will do great and we'll be doing this voice hopefully for quite a while, as he's been also cast to voice at least two other animated Scooby Doo films next year. Now he'll definitely be in the Hall of Fame of the Scooby Doo universe!(Hahaha.)

I hope Lillard continues voicing Shaggy for awhile. It's sad to see Kasem retire, but Lillard is a fine replacement and brings his own style to the character.
