*spoilers here* ... I agree with Mike. I'm female, and I nearly fell over when I saw the closeted actor ... not that the hero wasn't gorgeous, and what a bod, but he was a little too gay-looking for me, lol. But you can never tell about someone.
I also tend to side with Mike on the fantasy part of the movie: I'm wondering if the closeted actor really could have made the decision to come out as easily as he did. Remember, when Ellen came out during the run of her sitcom, her character was not married, so was hurting no one. Not even talking about the many people who depended on him for their jobs, the closeted actor might not have been as easily accepted by the viewing public if he came out because he was a father in his sitcom ... unless the sitcom got down to business and started talking about some issues that are very real for many families, where the dad decides to leave because he's really gay. There is always the possibility that that could have happened, although I don't know how much people might have wanted to laugh at that right now.
And I have to confess I did have a momentary disappointment when the movie didn't go in the direction in which I thought it might go. When the porn director ex-boyfriend showed up and the roommate became aggressive, and the hero had a few more run-ins after that, I began to think we were going to have a very dark ending, as in the main character being shot on the street by the porn director or someone else, and I felt that sort of an ending might have said how corrupt porn/hustling/Hollywood might be.
However, the movie did tie up loose ends nicely and you couldn't help smiling when the two guys went to the car hand-in-hand. I was hoping they wouldn't smooch in front of all those photographers ... let's try to be a little realistic ... but I have to say I didn't mind it. It was a happy moment I guess you just couldn't do without ... although I also don't know how ready the public is for gay pda. But I'm glad this movie did deal with some of the grittier realities of Hollywood and drug use. I'll tell ya, it does seem to be the gay movies that tell you what it's really like to try your hand at the acting profession.
