Ugh! Bad characters; crap story line; terrible acting!

You can definitely tell it's a low budget, "Indie" type film. I found this on Netflix, watched it, and didn't care for it. There are so many better options... hell "Queer as Folk" has some similar story lines and everything on that show is maxed out! I love it. This movie, not so much. Yeah the main guy is hot and there are hot guys running around... but that doesn't compensate for lack of talent. Sorry, I'm not buying it.

Watch it and judge it for yourself.

Likewise - some really terrible acting. It seemed like it would never end... Ludwinski is hot as *beep* though. Perez Hilton's appearance was the icing on the crap cake.

reply

Ludiwnski is NOT hot as *beep*. Good lord. The idea that that guy could have become some major porn star is preposterous. I could see him in some czech film with skinny eastern bloc boys or an episode of Dick Dorm, and that's about it. And the possibility that a legitimate and very attractive but closeted actor would fall in love with an escort/prostitute/porn actor and hire him as his personal assistance is so unbelievably unrealistic you would have to suspend all reason to stomach it.

Ludwinski and his so-called girl-friend were just opportunists looking to make it in Hollywood. It was actually gross the way the kept talking about trying to get ahead and how they looked down on people who waited tables and answered phones. That punk even turned his nose up at porn because he wanted to be a legitimate actor. Ha!!! Why yes, Brad Pitt, by all means! You just hold out for the right screenplay. C'mon! Guys like that are a dime a dozen in Cali.

What a ridciulous film. Even the title is stupid.

Other than that, I enjoyed it.

reply

LOL - the closeted actor was barely average looking. Did you watch a different movie?

reply

Wow. You have some high standards. "Barely average looking"??? You really believe that????

He was totally cute.

reply

*spoilers here* ... I agree with Mike. I'm female, and I nearly fell over when I saw the closeted actor ... not that the hero wasn't gorgeous, and what a bod, but he was a little too gay-looking for me, lol. But you can never tell about someone.

I also tend to side with Mike on the fantasy part of the movie: I'm wondering if the closeted actor really could have made the decision to come out as easily as he did. Remember, when Ellen came out during the run of her sitcom, her character was not married, so was hurting no one. Not even talking about the many people who depended on him for their jobs, the closeted actor might not have been as easily accepted by the viewing public if he came out because he was a father in his sitcom ... unless the sitcom got down to business and started talking about some issues that are very real for many families, where the dad decides to leave because he's really gay. There is always the possibility that that could have happened, although I don't know how much people might have wanted to laugh at that right now.

And I have to confess I did have a momentary disappointment when the movie didn't go in the direction in which I thought it might go. When the porn director ex-boyfriend showed up and the roommate became aggressive, and the hero had a few more run-ins after that, I began to think we were going to have a very dark ending, as in the main character being shot on the street by the porn director or someone else, and I felt that sort of an ending might have said how corrupt porn/hustling/Hollywood might be.

However, the movie did tie up loose ends nicely and you couldn't help smiling when the two guys went to the car hand-in-hand. I was hoping they wouldn't smooch in front of all those photographers ... let's try to be a little realistic ... but I have to say I didn't mind it. It was a happy moment I guess you just couldn't do without ... although I also don't know how ready the public is for gay pda. But I'm glad this movie did deal with some of the grittier realities of Hollywood and drug use. I'll tell ya, it does seem to be the gay movies that tell you what it's really like to try your hand at the acting profession.

In the book John was not a super buff model type, yet was very appealing to Adam. In the movie I found John was very cute and much better looking in the movie than the book suggested. Either way, to each his own. Adam liked him.

reply

Hey, I was just coming here to ask how different the movie was from the book. I actually enjoyed it, so was just wondering how faithful it was in telling the story...

reply

There are differences I recall. I'll mark these comments as a spoilers?
In the book, John is just one more in a long list of disappointments for Adam. They never get back together, even for a visit. In the movie of course John and Adam come out and profess to the media that they do indeed care for each other. In that regard, the movie has a feel good ending, while the book doesn't.
In the book, the first coworker that Adam chums up with is Brian, and it is Brian that Adam catches Nick screwing and doing drugs with at the party, while in the movie the character Brian is omitted. The other man Nick is caught partying with is just some random unknown person.
The movie has a more satisfying ending. The book reads in part as a thinly veiled, bitter tell all and partly as the author's therapeutic exercise. The end of the book sort of winds down to an uneventful conclusion.

Thank you so much! The way you describe the book is actually what I expected to see in the movie, so I was surprised by the way the film actually ends. Not disappointed, mind you, just surprised. Which did you like better?

reply

I liked the movie better.

reply

The acting may not have been really good and the story may have been a little cliche.
BUT this movie had a really good way to portrait Hollywood-wannabes and the whole LA society.
The ending and the whole development of the main character is just lovely, it almost made me cry.

^ I agree, I've seen my share of bad gay indie movies. This is actually one of the better ones.

Not saying that excuses its flaws. Just saying it's not that bad. Well made.

reply

I came in to post this same thing. I wouldn't blame the terrible writing and acting on the fact that it's an "indie" film. The production values were actually decent.

This movie suffers from the same failings of so many other American-made, gay-themed movies. For me they just all seem to play the same. The actors are interchangeable in look and wooden delivery. And most of the scripts seem completely artificial. It's like they were written by people who have no connection to the real world and not the slightest clue about how to tell a story.

Another 1 star movie. No surprises here.

reply

Not the worst movie I seen.
It's something light to watch to keep you from complete boredom.
