To the audiobook listeners...

Having listened to Lorelei King's audiobooks ever since she took over the unabridged recordings, I've gotten very used to her renditions of all the characters. And I think being used to her interpretation allowed me to accept the movie characters easier than others may have. Here's why...

Lorelei has a rather deep voice, not unlike Katherine Heigl. She does not affect any kind of accent or dialect for Stephanie. Unlike previous readers Lori Petty and Debi Mazar, there's no Jersey vibe to her Stephanie voice. Her Stephanie is very grounded and more of an everywoman, not the brassy, over the top "Joizy Goil" others may have envisioned her as. So being used to her more neutral version of Stephanie probably allowed me to accept Katherine Heigl, as she kind of melded to the voice Lorelei provided.

So, in summary, having already gotten used to someone else's interpretation of these characters, rather than forming them strictly with my own imagination, allowed me to view the movie more objectively...and it helped that Katherine Heigl's Stephanie already kind of matched the version of the character Lorelei provided with her voice.

Anyone agree or disagree?

I am an audiobook listener, as well as a paper book reader of these novels. Yes, I do enjoy Lorelei King's presentation, however, I think Lori Petty's is closer to what I "hear" in my head when I read. King is very calm & mellow, whereas Petty has more of the sass & acting inflections which are entertaining to me.

I don't recall hearing anything by Debi Mazar.

So, my preferring Lori Petty follows your assertion that our individual taste in narration leads us to a certain opinion of the movie.

Works for me! (did't like it)

I don't personally have a favorite book reader when it comes to Stephanie Plum, but the cast of this...this "movie" was dead wrong on all characters and I took it upon myself to stop listening to Evonivich's books because of her letting the movie people cast horrid people for her characters. I've done the same with James Patterson and Alex Cross. I don't care what people say or think, but TYLER PERRY IS NOT ALEX CROSS BY A LONG SHOT!!

That's your opinion. I had no issues with the cast at all. None were how I originally pictured them, but that doesn't make them wrong. People need to get over their preconceived notions of what characters should be and accept multiple interpretations. We'll all have preferences, sure, and I admit there are others out there who could've done these characters justice, but as it stands I liked the cast they chose. Hate me, curse me, damn me to hell all you want, but for God's sake it's only a movie! Just enjoy it!

And bayview, I agree with your statement. Having gotten very used to Lorelei's "everywoman" Stephanie, as you put it, made it easy for me to accept Heigl.

Katherin Heigel as Stephanie Plum isn't something to get over.
Sheri Sheppard as Lula isn't something to get over.
As for the other characters with the exception of Debbie Reynolds...isn't something to get over. If I was "going to get over it" and continue listening to the books, that's all who I'd picture when it comes to listening and that just ruins the fun out of who you see as the characters.

I loved C.J. Critt who did the earlier books. She is my favorite reader for this series. I hated Lorelei King's readings. I couldn't listen too the books anymore when she was reading them.
