One For the Money hit the theatres with a few strikes against it. More than one influential critic seem to have a hate-on for Katherine Heigl, so they ripped it to shreds before it opened.
We saw it the first week it was out, and liked it. I'm a fan of the books, and have read most of them more than once, although I will say that Evanovich should have stopped a couple of years ago - they're beginning to wear thin.
Heigl was good as inept Stephanie Plum Morelli worked. Lula was a riot. Stephanie's parents were OK.
As for Debbie Reynolds, I couldn't picture her as Grandma Mazur, but she played the part to perfection.
The big flaw in the casting was Ranger. Not the actor, but his dialogue. This Ranger was way too voluble. Ranger in the book rarely spoke, and could simply say "Babe," to Stephanie and make it sound like a whole sentence.
Otherwise, the movie was what it was supposed to be - entertainment.
It had a lot going against it, and the critics were just icing on the cake. To start with, the direction was horrible, many of the parts that make the books so enjoyable were excised, and the acting was atrocious. To top off, the studio refused to screen it before critics (never a good sign), the release date was pushed from August to January which is studio dumping ground for movies they have no faith in, and the previews were aimed only at fans instead of the average audience member.

All I could say was, I saw most of it on TBS last night, and it was watchable. In fact, I really liked Katherine Heigl in it. She was charming, sexy, shapely, and I liked the way she talked. Her female coworkers were cute too, but that's beside the point. And you can't go wrong with John Leguizamo.

No, you're wrong on every account.
Women went to see this film because Heigl produced it. Ergo because it's a woman backing the thing therefore women went in droves to support it.
But it's a piece of junk. The gags aren't well timed, and even when they are the actual joke material just isn't funny.
It's professionally shot, but the characters and the plot they're forced to go through is an absolute mess.
I fell asleep about a third of the way through, and had to leave, the movie was that bad.
Tell you what. Go watch "It's a Mad Mad Mad Mad World" or some other film that's known to be good, and then come back watch this rich spoiled brat's film.
Prediction; you'll snap back at me and say the two films are apples and oranges, or words to that effect, all the while ignoring the truth of my statement about Heigl as a film maker.
Your comments make it quite clear that we did not watch the same movie. By your own admission you fell asleep a third of the way through it and eventually walked out, so you can hardly comment accurately on something you didn't see.
The industry rag trashed the film, as did most critics, but your love for Heigl somehow turns the film into a success.
She's a spoiled brat who uses industry connections to get her crap on the screen. She and the rest of the world would be better off if she went back to working retail at the galleria.
