Better Choices for Stephanie and Morelli

My daughter suggested Amanda Bynes (at least she can deliver a funny line) and Shia LaBeouf as Morelli. I think they might have great chemistry, and at least he can act!

I always envisioned Carla Gugino as Stephanie when I read the books. I know she's too old now by Hollywood standards, but she's who I see. Joe Manganiello IS Morelli. I have nothing against Jason O'Mara, but he is not Italian nor does he look like Trenton. As for Grandma Mazur, I envisioned the old lady from The Wedding Singer when I read. No idea what her name is or if she's even still alive. Also, I think Eduardo Verástegui(look him up - he's gorgeous!) would be a better choice for Ranger. Daniel Sunjata is beautiful, but Ranger is supposed to be Latino, not African-American.

I just looked up all your picks for the roles, and they are PERFECT!

reply

You're absolutely right. Your picks get my vote as well.

reply

That's exactly who I always pictured as Grandma Mazur too when reading the books.

I think heigl was a poor choice for Stephanie, to me, Marisa Tomei would have been perfect... I'm from the burg in Trenton myself, heigl is no burger bit....

debbie reynolds is so way off as the grandma its pathetic too.... and ranger should have been a latino...

reply

Totally agree with your choices for Morelli and Ranger!

manganiello is part armenian. More so than italian.

i was actually very surprised to find out sunjata's half black/half white (i'm black myself). i've seen him in a couple things, and i've always thought he was DEFINITELY latino, puerto rican or dominican to be more specific. so i had no issues with that for my casting. my issue is that he wasn't dangerous enough for me. daniel sunjata looks really sweet to me, like the kind of guy who would be really nice to his mother in law. -_____-

Latinos can be and often are black! Sheesh, how badly did you fail basic geography not to know that?

All you have to do is look up famous black Latinos, or famous Afro-[fill in Latin country], and you'll find dozens of them listed for just about every country in Latin America!

There's no excuse not to know these things.

on that movie, in handcuffs, with Melissa joan hart, and Mario lopez, the grandma was played by what's her name, from lassie....maybe that's who they should have gotten for this grandma too......

often they recast in the wrong race...who knows why...but it is done...

Heigl was game, I'll give her that. And I understood the need to cast a "name." But her accent was unconvincing, grating and wavered throughout. My problem is that I cast the movie almost 20 years ago when I first read the book. So of course, Sandy Bullock, even around 50, makes my Stephanie short list, lol.

Along with the nostalgia casting, I would have gone Estelle Getty as Grandma Mazur, like half the Plum fan/atics out there. And Loretta Devine circa 1993 as Lula. She had the, um, voluptuous body, and a wonderfully distinctive, somewhat high-pitched voice that I immediately "heard" when I read the character. And for Vinnie, oh how I would have loved vintage Dan Hedaya (Carla's ratty husband on cheers).

Sunjata's skin tone isn't really off. Ranger has been described as mocha more than once (Sunjata's actually lighter, cafe au lait). But attractive though he is, he lacks charisma and doesn't ooze sex appeal (he's just a damn good-looking dude, which isn't the same thing). I could see Berasategui.

The most perfect contemporary casting, though, would indeed have been Manganiello as Joe. O'Hara's mighty fine to look at, too, but he's Irish through and through. And though I personally would love to stare into his pretty baby blues for decades if not all eternity, they ain't Morelli's smoldering brown eyes.

Look, casting is rarely perfect, even with makeup (often actors whose performances seemed perfect actually deviated quite a bit physically from literary descriptions of their characters). It's not so much the body as the embodiment, capturing the essence of the character. And no one really came close in OftM. Sadly, I doubt we'll see sequels, certainly not with this cast, which tanked at the box office.

I suppose JE was just happy to see something on screen after so many studio flirtations.

I still think this material would make a better weekly TV series than a feature film...part of the charm of the book was the ensemble of characters you got to know as well as the 'Burg you enjoyed visiting...but there really wasn't any really memorable storylines in any of the books that stood out as strong enough to carry a major motion picture; however there have been more than enough to carry a TV show for a few seasons...

Having said that, the casting for this film was terrible...I understand it would have been hard to live up to nearly 20 years of expectations and anything short of Sandra Bullock as Steph and/or The Rock as Ranger and/or Estelle Getty as Grandma Mazur would have been disappointing...but this casting was particularly uninspired...Heigl + O'Mara actually had a glimmer of chemistry, but their accents were unconvincing and rarely stayed on point for entire scenes...the guy playing Ranger was just a guy; nothing about his performance said cool/tough super-hero (he looked very uncomfortable/unnatural firing a gun)...and Debbie Reynolds was the absolute worst and completely wrong as Grandma Mazur...overall, I'd say Rex the Hamster was the best casting!

Can't imagine there'd be a big screen sequel...but a move to the small screen would def be the way to go for S. Plum + friends...

I agree with a lot of the choices here and I think the fact that none of them seemed to embody the characters at all was the worst. Ranger and Morelli are supposed to be smokin' hot. Ranger is supposed to be mysterious, more like "Batman." It just wasn't there. And any of us could pick a half a dozen women who are better choices for Grandma Mazur than Debbie Reynolds. As much as I love Debbie, she was horribly miscast here. Grandma was short and skinny. I forgot how Janet described her but more like a wet, scrawny chicken. And hysterical. Rudely so, the kind that embarrasses the hell out of you yet you can't help but laugh at the stuff that comes out of her mouth. That was NOT Debbie.

One thing we haven't touched on is Benito Ramirez. He scared the absolute crap out of me in the book, I pictured him as a young Mike Tyson back when Tyson was on his game and had that powerhouse punch. The Ramirez for the movie was only mildly scary. He should've been terrifying.

Connie and Vinnie were cast okay. But they never mentioned the duck, that was a running joke for many books. Lula was just okay too. Could've had a better option though.

My all time favorite pick for Grandma Mazur was Billie Bird, the grandma in Sixteen Candles who was also in Police Academy. I can see her shooting the chicken in the gumpy. I was looking forward to that scene, and it really let me down. Because it should've been hysterical. It wasn't.

Sandra Bullock is too ugly for the role, and far too whiny. She would have made Stephanie more annoying than she already is.

I do not agree.

Don't let anyone ever make you feel like you don't deserve what you want.

I think Leah Remini would be a perfect Stephanie.

reply

I also always felt Leah Remini would've been the best choice for Stephanie, and like I said: as a weekly TV show, not a feature film...

reply

I thought Linda Lavin would have made a great Grandma Mazur.

reply

Not old enough to be Grandma Mazur..I like Estelle Getty for Grandma...Jennifer beals from flashdance for Stephanie...the rock for ranger...the guy who played Christine's hubby on night court for morrelli,.Lonnie love for Lula...Steve beschemi for Vinnie...mike Tyson for Ramirez...the mother on girls just wanna have fun as ellen plum..can't picture Connie, joyce or Mr plum..oh and langley on xfiles as mooner..the fashion editor school mate of Romy and Michelle as Stephanie's sister...

reply

Are you serious? I think both Katherine and Jason are great actors, i love that mischievous twinkle in Jason's eyes and i think he has great comedic timing. But hey each to their own:)

reply

Not Italian (but better than an Irish guy playing a NJ Italian) but I think Galen Gering from Days of our Lives would have been a great Morelli.

reply

It was said Evanovich loved the casting. Oh, well. Heigl hasn't done anything of note since Grey's Anatomy. She certainly can't carry a picture as the lead character.

My picks:

Stephanie Plum - Lauren Stamile http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0821836/ Although she plays mostly serious roles these days, she started in sitcoms, so I believe she could handle Stephanie's kookiness.

Joe Morelli - Dylan McDermott http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001518/ He does have Italian ancestry (maternal grandfather). He's closer to how I'd picture Morelli, than Jason O'Mara was, but McDermott may be a tad too old to play Morelli.

Ranger - Rudy Reyes http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2674478/ Reyes was in the Marine First Reconnaissance Battalion (special forces) in Iraq and Afghanistan before taking up acting. He played himself in the HBO reality-based mini-series "Generation Kill". If you want a real life "Ranger", it's him. My back-up choice would be Vin Diesel simply because I can imagine him saying "Babe" to Stephanie. LOL

Grandma Mazur - Betty White http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0924508/ Perhaps not the top choice, but if anyone can pull off crazy Grandma Mazur, it's her.

Benito Ramirez - Former UFC champ, Tito Ortiz http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0651274/ He's how I pictured Benito Ramirez when reading the book.

I thought Sherri Shepard was a good choice for Lula. She embodies not only Lula's shape, but her attitude, as well. But, if I had to pick another actress for the role it would be Mo'Nique http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0594898/

The problem I have with Joe Manganiello playing "Morelli" is, at 6'5", Manganiello is way too tall to play "Morelli". He'd tower over everyone else. Find someone with his rugged good looks, at around 6-foot even, and you'd have Morelli.

I think Cloris Leachman would be perfect for Grandma Mazur. Mike Tyson as Ramirez would be great IF someone else dubbed his voice. no way would that voice work for that character.
