Church v Electricity

The ending makes clear that they could have knocked down the barn instead of the church. The film sets up this christianity v electricity dynamic. Following knocking down the church Ann sleeps with Caleb. Following starting the electricity John murders Caleb. Maybe the Amish were right, electricity isn't in man's best interests. They had a shot at a new life and they blew it.
