My Ending

I never read the book but I thought of my own ending and I kind of like it but that's just me.

Somehow Ann asks John if Caleb REALLY left and she looks him in the eyes but he doesn't answer. He just looks back at her and it's like they have an understanding without saying anything .

Then she goes over to him , kisses him or they start to kiss or make love and that's how it ends.

I was just thinking that maybe it would show that she understands just like he understands why she slept with Caleb and she just wants to live a happy ending with John on their farm.

Or it could and like she really was just trying to make him stay long enough to help finish the wheel and they were both in on it. So they both have similar mindset and are both happy just being together having a future on their farm.

I just don't like endings that don't have endings .

Forgive my spelling errors such as "and" for "end"

Yeah...that would make for a good conventional ending.

I like it, but I don't like the idea of it happening on the same day as when we last see Caleb.

But, if it happened at the very end...AFTER Ann has pushed the glass off the table, and AFTER Loomis seems to be contemplating jumping from the top of the falls, and AFTER he has restored electricity, and then AFTER he has moved the organ into the barn and she is playing it and he comes in. Then, if she asks him again about it, and he doesn't answer, and they just silently kiss...THAT would be a more definitive and "happier" conventional ending. 

I think I prefer the actual ending. She never loved John. Now she is stuck with him, forever.

Actually she did fall for john but when he refused her she went to caleb.
But i disagree on the conventional ending i think the ending is perfect the way it is.

The problem with the ending is that John's story reeks of bullshit. We know what it's communicating to Ann and (especially) the viewer: We are supposed to infer that John did something nasty to Caleb -- but hey, maybe not. I think there's more ambiguity by having John say, "Caleb slipped, I caught him, then he slipped again, and I couldn't hold on." The viewer knows three-quarters of that is true, and the last part may or may not be true. He could even admit that part of him maybe wanted Caleb to perish. Then again, maybe viewers would be inclined to take the last part at face-value, so it wouldn't generate the kind of discussion we've seen here.
