Why is it mainly a black male with a white woman?

Just wondering, rarely do I see a couple being a white male and black female in movies or commercials.

Just seems strange that if they want to break down racial barrier, why use a stereotype couple ie: a black male with a white woman?

For myself, this movies racial subplot may have been more interesting with a black female.

Part of the problem is that there are not a lot of black actresses that are viable female leads. Some black female leads, like Zoe Saldana, are regularly paired with white men (in Saldana's case, the majority of her films). If Hollywood allowed more black actresses to become stars, there would probably be more of these pairings.

Gugu Mbatha-Raw is next up and coming black female lead, and we'll probably start seeing her paired with more white male leads soon.

The main pairing Hollywood seems to have a prolem with is a dark-skinned black woman (like Lupita Nyong'o). If Lupita was white or a light-skinned black woman, we'd see her up for more female lead roles, and she'd probably have a career more like Margot Robbie.

Wow you managed to name a whole 9! Being able to name 9 black women doesn't mean that there is equality within the film business.

reply

What would equality mean in this context? Do white males, white females, black males, black females, asian males, asian females, maori males, maori females, etc all need to be equally represented at a 1:1 ratio when the US population (and yes, since we're blaming Hollywood, that is basically the US film industry) is nothing like a 1:1 ratio?

I guarantee you will always see a hugely disproportionate number of Chinese to EVERYONE else in Hong Kong cinema, same with Indians and Bollywood. But the US needs to strive toward some artificial equal token inclusion of everyone?

What a lovely way to burn...

12% of all Americans are black, not 90%. Got it?!

What about Michonne from TWD?

Cause last time we did that Samuel L. Jackson freaked out and started chainsawing fences and bushes. Now everyone is terrified.

Haha, I think I'm the only one who got this reference. Underrated film by the way.

"this movies racial subplot"

What racial subplot?

reply

Watch The Omega Man with Charlton Heston and Rosalind Cash.

There is only one good answer to your question, and it is: "Why not?" I'd also accept: "Why is that even a question?"

Typically in history, women are more up-wardly mobile via marriage than men. That is, it's usually been more acceptable for a woman to marry up than for a man. In US society (which seems to be what is depicted in this movie, even though it wasn't shot in the US), African-Americans are usually viewed as being in a lower social class than white people. So, it's make for better cinematic drama for black man to be with a white woman.

Better cinematic drama? You mean racist Deadwood liberal fetish. FTFY
