The Quiet Earth

I read the synopsis and thought this was a remake of The Quiet Earth. Especially as it is also from New Zealand.

You're not alone! Had the same thought. It was the main reason I decided to watch it. Its direction, however, is decidedly different than the one Quiet Earth took. Haha.

reply

Same here, I was drawn to finally watch to see how similar it was to The Quiet Earth since it has the exact same set up but they really do turn out to be different films. Neither should be dismissed if somebody has seen one and thinks it'll just be the same viewing experience. Same goes for I Am Legend & The Road's post apocalyptic solitude scenario, they are all their own thing.

It's actually based on a young adult book (from the '80s, I think) that I read years ago. The book was really dark and featured a rape scene that seems to have been cut from the film.

I need to check out The Quiet Earth!

reply

ETA: Turns out the book is from the '70s and the rape scene was an attempted rape scene. Jeez, I can tell it has been a long time since I read the book!

reply

Exactly, rape attempt.

Also got this movie thinking was a remake of Quiet Earth. After watching it I'm shure it is, but in the book there's only 2 characters (Ann & Jhon). Both will be side by side in my collection.

Which one raped her? That changes the story a bit. I konda like that version better. Say Loomis is the rapper, then act 3 makes a lot more sense.

reply

didnt remind me of this at all

Thank you for the replies that mentioned that it's different from The Quiet Earth.

TQE is a movie that stuck with me for decades, and I waited and waited for years till it finally became available for purchase (on DVD - don't know that it was ever available on video). That movie and soundtrack were so amazing that I didn't think I would bother to watch this one, thinking it was a remake. I think I'll give it a try after all!

I just saw "Z" this last week. I liked it. I am with you though. I thought something was supper "off" about John... We have the moment we meet him. I get that crazy little behavior when he can breath and all that. Then you have him getting drunk and being really mentally off. Maybe he had a drinking problem back before the "Event" but we see a personality change with the drinking. We see it with Caleb showing up. We see it right away with him jumping to conclusions and thinking he might have left Ann's brother to die. It isn't that big a stretch that murder is something he could and has done. Just because he is an engineer doesn't mean he isn't these things also. The guy witnessed the end of the world. I do like how they leave it as maybe he did or didn't but I think he did it.

What was it that was said in ROCKETMAN. You have to kill the person you are to be the person you want to be. Maybe that applies here in this universe as well. I'd love to see a legit remake of "The Quiet Earth" just to see how they approach humanity when there is only a handful of people left and women are scarce...

It reminded me of The World, the Flesh and the Devil (1959) - same post apocalyptic scenario, only survivors a white woman, black man and white guy.

reply

Yes, exactly. Maybe updated a little.

The end scene would've been Chris Pine waking up on a beach with the Enterprise above
