People complaining about the 'Racial Slurs...'

Need to watch "Gran Torino" by Clint Eastwood.

I'm so excited about this show. I love Chris and very much looking forward to the grandma character :)

Go blow your diggeridoo Marvin! Lol
Gran is awesome

People just want to complain. They hear that the show has racial epithets in it and complain without even trying to understand the context and that this is a comedy show. Comedy has long used stereotypes and taboos and Chris Lilley is hardly a stranger to using shocking language for humour.

reply

I don't think he's being racist at all, but some of the idiots online are quite worrying. I've seen people on Twitter say stuff like 'Chris Lilley is a genius! He says what we all want to say, but can't!' Oh, god. Probably the same people who kept complaining about 'pedophile Pete' after Summer Heights High.

I don't want your damn lemons!

I hate when people like something for the wrong reasons. It's like the song 'fight for your right' by the beastie boys; it was a parody song that was completely lost on people - it became an anthem for the people it was making fun of. Anyway at least they're giving him ratings.

yea, me neither.... i dont think people complaining have watched the whole show... the guy playing the father is one of my favorite charcters ... and i think that the portrayal of smouse is somewhat accurate ( doesnt mean every rapper is like that, but there r some real life examples), eventhough a little exaggarated (well its a comedy show afterall)... i really like how his characters evolve, they really grow on you and at times you feel sorry for them (even smouse)... and the ending is just epic... it brings tears to your eyes.... in my opinion, its one of the best shows i have ever watched ( and im not australian).... it did what no show ever did... it made me feel sad that its over, cause those characters really grow on you... its one of those rare shows that are just perfect... you watch this one guy play 6 or so characters, and they all have a personality of their own... i mean, the guy even plays twins, and they are so totally different...its amazing...
and if you watch closeley, you can see, that all these characters arent far from the truth... i know guys like that, i know mothers like jen.... and if you pay atention, you can see beyond the comedy... like for example jen, when she says something like: a mother needs to give everything for her kids, and if they dont like it, its not my problem.... it really changed the way i looked at her througout the show... the characters arent all what they appear to be, at the end of the show you really get the feelin that these are real people....

so people need to watch the whole show, instead of shouting racism everytime the word *beep* is spoken... why do they complain about smouse?... his father is a portrayed as a reaaly cool and succesfull nice guy who wants the best for his kid, eventhough his kid is an idiot (as he would say).... it isnt about him being black at all, and people who shout racism are kinda racist themselves

reply

When she called one of the kids coco-pops when they were playing soccer cracked me up.

reply

none of you get it.
comedy is no excuse for racism, and repeating the highly offensive and racists comments yourselves is not appropriate. i don't care how funny you think it is. you need to understand that lilley is sending up the racists themselves. there are a lot of people out there that are like these chracters. they wear the aussie flag as a cape, get a southern cross tattoo, and chase muslims on the beach. it is these narrowing minded racist people that lilley is poking fun at. He us using satire as a platform to criticise society. assuming that the lilley suports these statements and ideas is completely missing the point that lilley clearly intends this to be satire. he would not be wanting you to repeat these comments out of the satirical context he intended them to be used in.

This guy gets it.

^ you're correct lizzie. anyone who thinks otherwise is an idiot.

Biased, but honest.

Chase Muslims on the beach??? Really????

reply

'chase muslims on the beach'. yes, really.
-in reference to the cronulla riots.

People seem to be missing the point that in any series, there is character development. The characters learn lessons that make them better people.
So while there is some racial slurs, the characters will all - at some point - learn their lessons. The message will get through if you don't switch off after episode 3.

**SPOILER**

For example, Daniel with the fat gay guy. He uses the word 'fag' too much and as a lesson, his mother makes him hang out with a homosexual, who he realises is actually a cool guy. So you see, Chris obviously knows that there are some things that are going to offend people, but he is actually trying to get deep messages out there.

reply

exactly, but also i think that people need to relax, and that is the most important lesson... you need to have a sense of humor, if you couldnt make fun of everything, what would comedy look like, if everyone would get offended

i mean, im in a wheelchair, so how many times should ive gotten pissed because someone made a wheelchair joke... even chris lilley did it, and i laughed... the thing is, you live only once, so you shouldnt take it all too serious....

only idiots base theire lives on movies/shows... if youre a human being and you think rasism is ok because you think chris lilley is a rasist because you think his show somehow promotes rasism, then youre an idiot... if you think doing anything that hurts another being is allright, youre an idiot, its as simple as that, i dont think that any show ever promoted anything like that, cause, you know, if youre not an idiot, you will think about the stuff that goeas on around you and you will have no problem realizing that rape is bad, that rasism is bad, that killing is bad... because, people who use their own brain, can put themselves into another persons perspective, they have the ability to realize that they wouldnt enjoy getting raped, getting killed or constantly getting screwed over...
also smart people dont let themeselves getting dragged in by mobs, they think for themselves....

saddly, there are still alot of idiots in this wolrd

Apologies,id never heard of the cronulla riots!!!!

^This. I love how racism only ever seems to work one way. Only Australians seem to be racist in Australia. I despise the Cronulla riots, but to ignore the very reason the situation got that far is racism in itself.

All of the above is why I looked forward to s.Mouse every week. I LIKE making fun of s.Mouse. I LOVE the fact that Lilley portrays s.Mouse for the absolute fake, egotistical, untalented, ignorant "children" these "wannabe" rappers really are. I see it everyday in schools across the states, and know very well how these sad, disillusioned young kids will turn out when they realize they've made no career in rap music whatsoever. Should have learned to stay in school, get a regular job, and learn how to hold a decent conversation that didnt involve "ni**a" and "muthahF*" every other second.

The fact s.Mouse thinks he is a force to be reckoned with, when in reality the whole world is laughing at him, pretty much sums up the way I feel about young rappers anyway. I get it, and obviously others do to. Hope to see more of this character in the future. Its like looking in the mirror for alot of kids I know.

I found every "racial slur" utterance hilarious because they were in an ironic context and weren't meant to be taken seriously...

It's incredibly lame that people automatically label anyone who uses a taboo slur (in any context) as racist. 90% of all racist slurs I've heard were not in a racist context or said by a racist person.
