At least ten more scary things jumping out at Daniel Radcliffe. If it doesn't work the first time, just jam more and more in.
More HORRID dialog: 'But you have something they don't.' (a car.) LOL!!! along with several more 'But I saw her, I saw something, I think I saw something'.
Many more darkly lit sets with ghost voices whispering and creepy toys. Too bad those toys couldn't sew together a better film!
I was thinking it could have used some more dialogue...or just more of Daniel Radcliffe walking around with a candle while breathing heavily, as that was the majority of the film.

I liked that the dialogue was minimal. I felt that it helped to build atmosphere. The film is in its greatest part a mood piece.

Not the VERY best Ghost Story around, but nice look, mood, atmosphere a la British Ghost Stories.
One of THE best British Ghost Stories that I've seen recently which was FAR stronger and although a period piece, more modern than this one, was one starring Rebecca Hall (who was in Ben Affleck's 'THE TOWN') I can't remember the title right offhand, but MAN... THAT little baby had me by the wee wee and peripherals and would NOT frigg'n let go!

Agreed as well. Although the small amount of dialogue it did have could be much improved. It was an alright film.

The first 30 minutes or so of the movie was great, I was expecting a thriller and for one of the townspeople to be involved.
Then it just seemed like the writers gave up and rather than develop the story, they just had Harry Potter breath heavily while walking around the house with a candle as loud noises occasionally happened.
A real let down.
(And before anyone asks, "why would you come on the board if you didn't like the movie!?"... I come and post on EVERY movie that Netflix sends me that I watch, good and bad. This one just happened to be pretty bad.)

It's called an 'Old Fashioned Ghost Story'...
If you DON'T like these kinds of films, then why bother coming here and calling it stupid. I personally do NOT like Torture Porn films that many others really enjoy; so I DON'T come here and trash films like 'HOSTEL' & 'SAW', etc. because my calling them stupid or perhaps saying 'Gee, all they need is more torture, Ha Ha...' misses the point of why people look up and read about films that they may be interested in seeing.
YES... You are right that by modern standards the film was REALLY simple, pretty tame, and to a lot of people today who are more jaded or 'sophisticated', very boring.
YES, there are a LOT of jump scares in the film, which again, if you think jump scares are stupid then clearly this movie will not do very much for you. Which is fine; I'm not gonna call you stupid or say you are wrong, but merely this just is not the kind of Horror film that you like or enjoy
I myself, although I DO really like heavier Horror films (NOT torture porn, but heavier suspense and dread and Fantasy based Horror like 'REANIMATOR', 'DOLLS', 'PUPPETMASTER', well made Ghost Stories, and newer Creepy Horror films - for example one of my favourite Horror films is 'SESSION 9' which is extremely psychological and complex) but I still enjoyed this one because I also like really old school Horror. However, I didn't think that this film was super GREAT or anything; I gave it a 6 mainly for the nice old fashioned look, atmosphere, photography, location, and for me, the jump scares DID work every time, but I am a more sensitive person for those kinds of things IF they are done effectively.

This is the worst Hammer film I've ever seen. Although it had its macabre elements such as opening the coffin to deposit the boy (which I thought was awesome), ultimately the majority of the film was a bunch of horror movie cliches without any real horror. I was hoping it would be like the old school Hammer productions that were driven by a disturbing story and the pursuit to solve a mystery.
shareYeah, I wouldn't really classify it as a Classic or typical HAMMER film at all either. I too really like their old style including Mystery elements and such.
That's too bad you didn't enjoy this film; like I had mentioned before, I only gave it a 6 mainly for visuals and what I felt was a good look and atmosphere. Perhaps some of these common Horror elements have been used so much that you would consider them 'cliche', so that is understandable. There certainly wasn't anything 'new' or progressive about the story, really...
BTW, since you brought up HAMMER, did you have a chance to see their other recent release 'WAKE WOOD'? I felt that it was an excellent update for HAMMER and really reminded me of their signature type of mood and story.
