'Hellcats' canceled: What Season 2 would have been

Yes, it's true, Lancer University fans. The CW has pulled the plug on "Hellcats" after a ratings slump in the second half of the season, leaving us with a bit of a cliffhanger at the end of Tuesday's Season 1 finale, in which Marti discovered that her long lost sister, Dierdre, has been keeping an important secret: their father is alive and in touch.

A few weeks ago, Zap2it attended a press junket with the cast and Kevin Murphy, the creator of "Hellcats," who let us in on a few of his Season 2 plans. At the time, Murphy expressed confidence in a Season 2 pickup, telling reporters that the network and studio were supportive of extending the series.

Now that the show has been axed, here's a bit of what you would have seen had the series lived on.

The return of the love triangle! The Marti/Dan/Savannah situation wasn't explored much in the second half of the season, but it certainly wasn't over. Murphy confirms that they pulled back from that story with the intention of returning to it in Season 2.

Dan in real life. Now that Dan Patch was accepted to Lancer University, he was set to have some more central storylines next season. "He's always either been the boyfriend of Savannah or the friend of Marti. I really wanted to be able to give him more points of access to Alice and Lewis and Vanessa and everyone else."

Which brings us to... Dan as a cheerleader? "We almost got there in the finale, but we had to cut it for length because it was running so long," says Murphy. "We went as far as we had him in a Hellcats uniform. We never shot it, but we'll get there."

More A.J. Michalka. Murphy planned for AJ to recur, "but in my heart, she's a regular," he adds. He intended to continue AJ's character into next season despite the blow up at the end of the episode.

More concept episodes, like the Zombie movie episode. "We want to go back to the genre well," Murphy says. "We could do aliens, maybe post-apocalyptic cheerleaders, a Western." "Cheerleaders in the hood," added series star Robbie Jones.

Returning guest stars. In addition to A.J., Murphy mentioned that he hoped to have Ciara return to the show. When we spoke with the pop star, she was on board for a return.

Directed by Tom Welling. During Season 1, executive producer Tom Welling had to dedicate most of his time to starring in the final season of "Smallville" -- and directing a few episodes. He's very proud of "Hellcats" and was looking forward to directing episodes of Season 2

Sounds like some great ideas were in store for season 2. It's a shame we'll never see any of it materialize.

I feel like, we were left with some cliffhangers.....The ony show that looks good in my opinion for Fall is 'The Secret circle".....I lam aSarah Michelle Gellar Fan. But I couldn't take to the preview for the show "The Ringer', I always liked Rachel bilson's character summer on The OC....I was hoping to see her in more things after, The OC..

However I also couldn't take to the preview for "Hart of dixie" They could have easily moved "hellcats" back to Wednesday....But CW is stupid with their renew one show, can one show crap....Both shows could have been renewed,...

Smallville Left an open slot for Friday, the could have moved ANTM, or 90210 there.

I really don't care for those ideas. Rehashing Marti/Dan/Savannah? Bringing AJ on permanently? This cancellation doesn't hurt nearly as much now.

reply

I like the show, but those ideas were lame.

I just rediscovered this show. Wow. I'm with you. Im kind of glad they canceled it. I did not want a rehash of the MDS triangle. It was way to Dawson's creek. I sort of liked Savannah/Dan at times but I do think they put them back together rot soon. I just liked them because I think they were good for each other. The pushed each. I do think Matt/Aly had more chemistry though… so. I just sort of felt like Dan was Marti's safety net. I truly do think they were better as friends. Also bring AJ permanently? No no no. She would make a good recurring or guest star. To much of her would be annoying. Also towards the end they had way to much guitar playing going. on.

I'm also so not a fan of the Dan as a cheerleader thing at all. I do know a lot of male cheerleaders do do it for the scholarship and I imagine that would be the only reason for Dan but its still weird. He's not Lewis.

RemiRoyer33 you're either jealous or blind. She may not be everyone's type but she obviously very pretty.

I don't think she's that pretty either, so I guess I must be a bitter jealous person or going blind in my left eye..

It's obvious the show failing was the CW's fault. The ratings weren't all that bad, actually around 2 million, and around some of the same ratings as other shows on the networks that they keep renewing. However, once they moved it to Tuesday, it constantly fell in ratings, which is their fault. Perhaps they should have moved it back, or onto another night. They didn't even give it a chance, and in my opinion, they wanted it to fail because of the new shows they have lined up.

I'm just glad they renewed Supernatural and Vampire Diaries. VD was a given considering it's the highest rated show on the network, and Supernatural is a fan favorite. They would have so many people lashing out and writing hate mail that it's almost smarter for them to just continue it. LoL. Plus with it paired with Smallville on Friday nights, it actually gave them more viewers on Friday nights, so they renewed it. I'm glad, because it's my favorite show, but I really did enjoy Hellcats.

I just think it's ridiculous they keep renewing shows that have just as bad of ratings as Hellcats, or even crappier ratings, like OTH, Gossip Girl, and 90210 do not have as good of ratings as Supernatural or Vampire Diaries. Even Nikita had better ratings than some of those shows, and Smallville and Supernatural had to survive on Friday night, which is basically dead slot night. It's just ridiculous that they didn't even renew Hellcats, but I partially blame that on Dawn O stepping down from CW, and they want to get it a makeover.

I have to agree that the only show I will definitely be watching is the Secret Circle, so now we will have two shows on the network both based on books by the same author. Ringer, I don't even know if that will be any good, but I might try it, and Hart of Dixie looks more like something they would air on ABC. I mean, come on....They're trying to bring in more shows that bigger networks usually pick up to have more viewers, but it's just not going to work in my opinion.

Actually, xxstain, OTH, Gossip Girl, and 90210 may not have as high ratings as TVD or Supernatural, but they all have higher ratings than Hellcats AND a higher 18-49 demo. Even Life Unexpected, which was cancelled midseason, had higher ratings than Hellcats. Hellcats was the lowest performing show for the CW this year. Of course they were going to cancel it.

I don't find her especially pretty, but I don't understand this charge that she's an ugly girl. She certainly isn't my idea of ugly. And even if she were homely, so what? It's not as if they made her Dan's girlfriend. The show set her up as an eccentric, not as a beauty.

If that's the direction they were going in then I'm glad they've cancelled the show. I don't like any of those ideas and he didn't even mention Alice or Lewis. Boooooooooooooo!

This. This makes me glad that it got canceled. I cringed while reading this. The triangle. Dan as a cheerleader. More AJ. More concept episodes. I guess it's nice the way ended. It was a lovely finale. A beautiful ending.

Agreed. It sounds to me like he couldn't move beyond his own lamest ideas. Casting Aly's real life sister as her sister on the show was one of the lamest. The show needed more reality, not more gimmicks.

Seems he had no plans for Gale. Maybe he was already seeing him in Secret Circle.

I've only just finished watching the last episode, great series. I am not too bothered about the series being finished now after this information. I cannot stand concept episodes that don't move the story forward. Like dream sequences, a waste of time.

The main focus should have been on the now-alive father. It probably would have been, so I guess that's why they never mentioned it?
