What the hell just happened?

Did anyone watch last night's episode? (10/7/2016)

What the hell happened at the end? Oh, I did understand Jamie turning down the offer from the Hollywood director. That part seems clear. But -- as usual for this show -- there were THREE (3) different plots, churning around, and the other two left me totally in the dark. Yeah, it's probably my fault for not being smarter. But dammit, I have been watching "Blue Bloods" since Year One, and I almost always understood the plots before. Not this time.

The principal plot is the one where a young woman ("Emily?") is systematically beaten and raped by the man she calls her "boyfriend." The police investigate and find that she actually ENJOYS this treatment, and even though Danny and Baez and Erin want her to press charges, she refuses and says if the cops press charges against the man, she will refuse to testify.

First mystery: WHY do Danny, Baez and Erin insist on charging the boyfriend if the "victim" refuses to press charges? There is no case, so why do they bother?

Second (and most baffling) mystery: At the end, we see what looks like a perfect set-up. The brutalizing boyfriend sets up another date with Emily, they go to her apartment, he calls her a "whore," then produces his handcuffs, and appears ready to beat her up again. The cops have set this up, and they are ready to pounce as soon as the boyfriend gets physical. But then....?

Suddenly, the guy stops what he is doing and calls out: "Hey Officers Reagan and Baez! Did you really think I am stupid enough to fall for this set-up?" Reagan and Baez are floored by this. They let the guy walk away, free as a bird.

Yeah, the show was good up till that point. But, as a faithful follower of "Blue Bloods", I am completely in the dark as to what happened here, and why. I expected the writers would give us a satisfying answer to the mystery... but they didn't. It looks as if the writers ran out of ideas. There was absolutely NO explanation of WHY the cops set a trap, when the "victim" clearly did not want them to, and then the extra mystery of HOW the guy knew it was a trap. He walks free! And the hour was wasted.

Cheers,
Dan

Yeah that was pretty messed up. But after they( Dildo, baez and needs a sandwich) tried everything to get the guy and then all of a sudden the girl wants to go back to her place? He knew what was going on and he totally made anA ss out of everyone. And they deserved it. Anyone could tell it was a set up. Whoever decided that storyline was obviously asleep!

Erin explained that even though the victim chose not to press charges, the state can. But without her testimony, they really wouldn't have a case, which is why they tried to talk her into testifying.

Instead they went with Plan B-- allow the victim to put herself in danger and catch the scumbag in the act. BUT... he guessed it. Not really all that surprising, if you think about it. His 'girlfriend' called the police, caused him to be taken into custody, but suddenly wants to see him? Not hard to smell the set-up on that one. (Worse comes to worst, the guy feels stupid calling out to Reagan and Baez and nobody's there.)

Like Law & Order, sometimes this show demonstrates that things don't always go the way they should, and sometimes the bad guys get away. It doesn't always make for a 'feel-good' show, but it's the truth.

Speaking of "what just happened," I was asking myself that question during the episode because Erin and Danny had pretty much switched sides. And Erin called him on it, too. Usually HE's the one saying "put this guy away" and SHE's saying "not enough evidence." This time was the opposite.

So the big question is: WHY? Is it true that Danny can't understand what Emily went through? Does some part of him think that the scumbag didn't do anything really wrong? Not consciously, of course, but subconsciously....  

Danny explained why he acted like that. He was thrown off by him being brought in for killing the serial killer. So he was a bit gun shy.

IMO he wasn't so much "thrown off" as he is actually "pissed off" that he was questioned over his authority to do whatever he pleases as a cop. how dare anyone even think to question that he is capable of killing someone on purpose using his own rules. just ignore his record of civilian complaints AND his well known reputation as a cop who ignores policy. the ends always justify the means with danny because he's ALWAYS CORRECT.

forget all of the stuff he does on the job that's out of line and remember how he treats linda and erin when they dare to disagree with him. erin is the attorney who KNOWS the law and legal consequences but his job is more important so he should set the course. linda as a nurse has a far less important job than his so even a PATIENT in need of care and surgery must be grilled by him because he says so. so he throws an immature, insulting, disrespectful, and obnoxious tantrum when he doesn't get his way. even jamie is not a good enough cop in danny's eyes for usually following the law and policy. (apparently neither was joe) and baez is a total punk to allow him so much room to control their work relationship.

The principal plot is the one where a young woman ("Emily?") is systematically beaten and raped by the man she calls her "boyfriend." The police investigate and find that she actually ENJOYS this treatment,

Just want to clarify... the woman stated that at first she consented to the boyfriend's actions, using the handcuffs, etc., but then the guy took it too far and got violent. At that point, she wanted it to stop, told him to stop, and he didn't. It's at that point that it becomes sexual assault.

So there's a big difference between 'liking it rough' and rape. That difference begins when one participant wants it to stop.

And let's not forget he did it to other women in the past. I suspect his lawyer had used those same lines on the previous victims, how she would paint them in court, to get the charged dropped. Erin wanted to get him off the street before he goes way too far and kills or maims someone.

The problem is that this makes it almost impossible to prove that the rape happened beyond a reasonable doubt, even if a rape actually happened.
And sometimes, no rape happened, like in the case I mentioned before with the Columbia student who was falsely accused and convicted of rape because of an overzealous female prosecutor (police did not think there was a case but she insisted to charge the poor guy) and a corrupt judge who refused to allow exculpatory evidence.

Yep, Dan - I saw it and was pretty annoyed with the "writing".....or lack thereof. I really appreciate a show that remembers which City/Community/Era/etc they are representing, and what really gets my goat is BLUE BLOODS is supposed to be about one of the most populated US Cities with a "criminal element" to match - meaning the Manhattan (et al) D.A.'s office have more than enough cases to handle each and every day (hell, they could hire 50 more Deputy DA's, ADA's, 100 Clerks - work 24/7 and STILL not get through their backlog in a timely fashion!) without trying to convince a "maybe/potential-victim" to press charges! I mean WOW! (being a bit cynical) you'd think if they could AVOID the nightmare of "going through the process" of such a weak case as this THEY'D JUMP ON IT.....because (as I said) New York City already has more than enough law-breaking folks stacked on top of each other at Riker's............but in last night's ridiculous episode - time & resources were thrown away on this storyline. There are few things I hate worse than being treated like an idiot by writers of TV shows - while I do understand it, it's still difficult to accept that the writers pander to the "average American's IQ/Completed Grade level"......talk about your sad sign of the times.😿

mate!

Better to keep your mouth shut and be thought an idiot - than to open it and remove all doubt!

They did it so they can have a setup villian for the end of the season, pretty easy to figure that one out.
