This Guy Learned NOTHING

This movie does a good job of pointing out how disgustingly self-centered, greedy and arrogant this guy is. He actually says it's hypocritcal of people to condemn him when they cheer for financial thiefs in movies, like "Bonnie and Clyde," "Catch Me if You Can," etc. What an idiot. Those are movies. The subject of "Catch Me if You Can" was a teenager. Dreier was a Yale and Harvard Law graduate. He tries to evoke sympathy by talking about how there was no one around to tell him not to do this stuff (steal funds from hedge funds in a client's name with the client having no knowledge). He says the only reason most people don't do what he did was that they are afraid of getting caught. What he doesn't understand is that "most" people aren't greedy, most people don't care about being rich or having all the things he felt he was -- by his own admission -- entitled to. He had $10 to $20 million dollar homes in about 5 locations, an $18 million yacht, a $220,000 car. Mr. Dreier most people don't do the things you did because they are not GREEDY. You are and you are paying for it in prison -- as well you should. I hope your prison stay is extremely uncomfortable.

I must agree, Mr Dreir stole from people that entrusted their money to his Hedge fund. Catch Me If You Can ? Mr Abagnale stole from banks and how much sympathy have banks earned throughout history ? especially in the last 8 years !
I only feel sorry for his Dog, he is the only innocent victim and maybe his children, as they must live with the name.

reply

Good grief, yes.

"Such and such didn't support me after I helped him."
"There were only 26 victims."
"No widows and orphans lost their life savings."
"I didn't steal that much."
"I didn't buy stuff because I wanted it, but so I could steal more money."
"If my personal life had been better, I probably wouldn't have done it."

Blame, blame, blame everybody else.

And then he has a "prison consultant".

"I can't eat hotdogs. There's a choice, right?"
"I hope the guy next to me doesn't snore."
"I can't do menial work for 8 hrs a day."

I feel bad for the dog too. His children not so sure. At least not the son featured in the documentary. Not after the son said, I care to know the details of what happened. Seems just as arrogant as the father.

If you can't walk and talk/text at the same time, do the rest of us a favor and get out of the way.

The documentary is good at exposing a criminal, greedy mind but I lost patience with this man after a while. He is simply greedy and stole money to keep his firm up and running. He still makes an excuse not to do menial work, God forbid, at the possibly posh prison he will be in. He is self-asbsorbed and only believes in wealth at any cost. There is no real humanity to this man aside from making sure his children can smoke inside a Hamptons home.

Films are not reality. Reality is not film. Film is only an approximation of reality.

i thought this movie did a GREAT job in showing us where he was coming from and what his mindset was. while i think what he did was awful and inexcusable, i do agree with him that in a way the people who are stealing things like clothing may in fact do what he did if they were given the opportunity. i think most humans are greedy and want what they can't have. i wish we heard from some of the victims but i don't think that's what this was about...only what was going through his mind on the days leading up to his sentencing.

You are 100% correct DorsiaRes. Most people aren't stealing millions because they don't have the opportunity to... What this man did was awful, but I do believe if given the opportunity, the person shoplifting a hundred dollars of goods would go for the millions. He has a point.

I do NOT consider this statement to be a blanket statement, but for the greater majority placed in his shoes, it would happen. You start to justify what you do by thinking of the hundreds he employed and their family (as he did in the documentary). It happens.

Honestly.....and I'm NOT proud, exactly....I'm sickened cause i will never have the CHANCE OR GUTS to do the same....I MAY have gone along with it.....but UNLESS U are someone who got ripped off......I can't see how u can't be jealous of this guy....simply fot having the NUTZ....BRAINS...education....and upbringing...ALL important factors on his ability to ALMOST piull this *beep* ...even IF he never tried this Ponzi scheme u KNOW he's done a *beep* of dishonest things in his career.....all garnering A TON of cash and prestige....

Again....not proud, but honest

reply

He didn't almost pull off anything. Ponzi Schemes all eventually fail. Even if he had gotten that 40 mil from the pension in Toronto that would have only set him square with more funds looking for their money soon. He was on his last legs either way.

BE YOUR OWN FANBOY

*beep* not getting caught part is spot on....if MOST people KNEW they would get away with what HE did...they would do it in a heart beat.....cause MOST people....with a bit of prodding would jump in both feet....ESPECIALLY fi they knew there would be only positive consequences...

TELL ME...if people are generally HONEST.....why would so much money be spent on DOOR LOCKS, SECURITY SYSTEMS, INTERNET SECURITY.....AS WELL AS WHY ARE ID's required.....passports.........it'd because WITHOUT THEM.......THE MAJORITY OF HE POPULATION is gonna take advantage of the situation.......people ONLY need an excuse to become ths guy

The thing that annoys me about this greedy cook sucker is when he explained WHY he started doing it....he was complaining that he, as a high powered nyc attorney was getting paid REASONABLY well, but not great.............OMFG.....can u imagine what he was making.....SEMI legitimately?? He was paying his average lawyer 1.2 M ANNUALLY.............SO WHAT DOES THAT SAY A OUT HIS compensation.....I don't think 20x that is outlandish guess......and THAT is REASONABLY well?? But, I guess if you are gonna have the BALLZ, THE GUTS, THE SAAVY TO pull all this off.....you just GOTTA LOOOOOOOOOOVE money, power and fame......and, honestly, I think THATS the reason many people don't try this....even people in the position to try.......power, fame and EVEN MORE cash simply doesn't mean enough.........he must have been ONE INSECURE SOB.

reply

He clearly doesn't see that the way things are is the bigger the crime the bigger the time. Totally unrepentant a-hole. His argument is "Well everyone does bad things, so why are they mad at me?"

Totally well deserved that he got nailed.
