Based on true events?

Not sure if it is but there was a case in the St. Thomas/ London Ontario area back in the nineties that was very high profile. The only reason they got caught was foolish abuse of their new found wealth. Very good quality notes were almost impossible to spot by the average cashier. If they were a little smarter and less greedy they could've been millionaires and gotten away with it. But, they blew it!
