Appreciated more on 2nd viewing

I watched this film before release at London Frightfest. I enjoyed it at the time, but was left a little nonplussed at the ending. However, on 2nd viewing, years later, I realise this film is a little gem. Strong performances, genuine chemistry, intelligent pacing and good scares. Oh yes, the ending made a whole lot more sense to me. Claire is a psychic/medium, but is completely unaware of her gift. Hence her terror at hearing and seeing the ghosts. The last terrifying ordeal in the cellar brought on a fatal asthma attack. Leanne foresaw this, but ultimately could not stop it from happening, as she knew Claire would be compelled to investigate her instincts.
5.5 is a scandalous score.

Agreed. Just watched it again last night and changed the score from 8 to 9. This is a movie to be watched alone in a dark house with a great deal of snacks. I loved the acting and the fact that it played almost like a light comedy for the first half. Many people claim that nothing happens in the whole film but I think the best horror movies are like that. Getting to know the characters, building atmosphere, anticipaiting the inevitable. For me this is one of the best new horror movies and it's a shame Ti West hasn't done more than he has.
