This reminds me of an old black and white horror movie

Unfortunately I can't remember the name. In the story the husband attempts to drive his wife - who has a fragile disposition - to death with fright to get her inheritance. The plan is to use accomplices as ghosts and rig up a very scary dummy on wires for the coup etat. Does it ring any bells?

Taste of Fear (1961) could be the one. Also try both versions of Gaslight.
