I'm not sure the film and its ending did miss the point of morality. Etienne experiences a personal reckoning that may change him for the better in spite of the ending. I think the film leaves us with this as a question. A man's complacent life has been disturbed by karma; when things settle once more will he resume his complacent life?
Anyway I prefer an ending in this mould rather than a character chastening that satisfies in its predictablility.
