LOL was GOOD!

I saw it last night in Houston and it was much better than I had expected. The story line is cute and the music is great. Douglas Booth is fabulous and he can sing!! My niece Bridget was in it and I went to see her but loved the rest of it and was glad I went. It is worth going to see if you are lucky enough to live in one of the "chosen" cities where it is playing.

Was it better than The Last Song? What do you give it out of 10? If you give it over a 6, I'll watch it.

I would say it was a 7+. It is kind of random in the beginning but you find yourself getting caught up in the characters and, like I said, the music is great and Douglas Booth is beautiful. My niece loved working with him. He was very kind. She is the Down Syndrome girl who was at the house in Paris.

reply

so you give it a 7 just because one of the actors is not a douche? please stop rating movies ever again with such criterias, or better stop rating movies at all.

7+... whatever you're smoking, can i have something pls?

Shut up, this movie was actually funny, better than I expected, better than a lot of hollywood garbage out there... get your head outta your a$$ and enjoy life for once.

reply

DO not give them ideas. CW already have plenty of crappy shows and 24-year-old crappy actors playing 17 year olds.

My girlfriend made me watch this movie with her. As a 'thank you,' I drove her out to the middle of nowhere and pushed her out of my car. She might be angry.

Think it just shows the embarrassing state of the world that anyone could give this film more then a 1/10, I watched it to review for a local magazine with my 12 year old daughter and its the 1st movie in about 5 years I couldn't watch to the end, I can't find a single piece of constructive criticism to give for this, just a massive sigh and a shake of the head as I hit the stop button.

reply

The film gives a realistic portrayal of teens. Don't hang out with many teens, uh? Wait a bit... You'll see in around 3 years the kind of teens your daughter goes to school with... ;)

As for the 1... You're reviewing movies and say that? The film has a more than passable technique (the direction and editing are not flat), so even that already has to stand for than 1/10.
Then there is the fact that the screenplay is an accurate sociological portrayal of many teens nowadays.
And then there is the fact that there is good acting. Miley, Demi and some others are highly believable (maybe if you don't know this type of people in real life you can't see it... Sorry for you but I can tell you they sound real).
All of this already equals to MORE than 1/10 for people who are not blind extremists when they rate.

I want to add that I personally don't really like this movie. I'm rating it 6 though. I'd totally get if other people rated it 4 to 8. A 6 doesn't mean the same thing for everybody anyway.
But 0, 1 or 2??? Well, LOL indeed!

reply

Nice construction reply, I was being a bit melodramatic giving it a 1 out of 10, the reviews i do are out of 5, 5 stars to be precise, i did sadly give it a 1 star rating, as did my 2 other colleagues. Ironically my daughter did sit on her phone for the majority of the film so I do see a small resemblance, but I still thought this was kind of an insult to the movie world, being based on an award-winning French comedy(that if you haven't seen you really should, it was superb) I'm not really sure how much more they could of massacred this, from cast, to script, it was very hard to watch. Incidentally i also have a 16 year old daughter who out right refused to accompany us due to some very colourful opinions on miley cyrus, someone i admittedly know pretty much nothing about, other then she won't be winning any oscars in this life time lol.

A 6 on IMDB is a very good score, there are a lot of films that are fantastic and are still only worth a 6, so I really do think you've gone way to high with that, the 3.8 that its currently on is more then fair.

reply

Indeed 1/5 is not the same as 1/10.

I don't get it when you're talking of LOL being based on a "superb" French comedy.
This US version of the French LOL is the EXACT same film than the French one; I repeat: EXACT SAME FILM.
So I'm totally baffled that someone would call the French version "superb" (I saw it by the way) and this US version crappy.
"They" massacred the French film? Lol that's hilarious because the US film was directed and written by the SAME French director/screenwriter

I wouldn't say 6 here is a "very good score". More like an honourable score. A good score would be 7, a very good score 7.5 and above.
For instance, I just saw Olympus Has Fallen. It received mixed reviews from critics and has 6.5 here and having a look at the board and reviews shows the film is considered okay by some but not much more. 6 doesn't indicate a much loved film.

I should add that ratings are personal. To me 6 means it has some qualities but also problems you can't overlook. It doesn't mean good. Good to me is 8. I rarely give below 5. Because most of the time, even if the story is blah, there is an okay technique/acting so I would consider it deserving at least 5 for that.

I consider LOL's story blah, but at the same time I can see how it manages to portray today's youth. Well, part of it anyway. That's why, to me, it's a 6. I'm not waiting for other people to give it a 6 too since ratings are personal.

Last thing, in most cases I noticed I'm always 1 point higher than the IMDb rating. For instance, I gave 7 to Olympus Has Fallen. I almost never watch the ratings before seeing the film, only after. It's rare that there is such a gap between my rating and the rating here. That's why I think the rating for LOL is influenced by a lot of Miley haters or people that misunderstood the movie for a reason or another.

Like when you say they massacred the French version. I guess, since you're not French (I am), you have this idealized image of French cinema that most foreigners have. So you were influenced in liking the French version. And consequently influenced in disliking the terrible distasteful US remake - not knowing that the same team of filmmakers were behind the remake, which is actually just the same movie with english dialogues. I really feel the need the repeat it again: both scripts are exactly identical, and the scenes are identical.

Well, except for the actors.

(Nobody will ever convince me that Demi Moore can act half as well as Sophie Marceau, and the same holds for Cyrus and many of the others.)

So already, the French and the U.S.A's "LOL" are not "the EXACT same film" so it makes sense to rate them differently: the French one was tolerable, but the U.S.A's was not.

reply

Oh come on. Demi Moore is at least a decent actress, who would say the contrary? And Marceau isn't Meryl Streep.
Miley is good in that movie... it's like I wrote earlier. Miley has the nasty public image of a brat and a commercial pop star that's why this film is rated so low. But she probably acted better than the french actress.

reply

Sophie Marceau has wonderfully expressive and interesting facial expressions that I haven't seen in Demi Moore's acting, so I think she's the better actress - as well as doing some writing and more directing than Moore. Perhaps it's just a matter of taste.

However, Miley Cyrus was just wrong for her part in "LOL": she looked too old and too worldly for a coming of age film. (While I've heard some vague murmurings about Cyrus, I couldn't care less. Life is too short to read entertainment news or to watch ET! Many people say that Hitchcock was an absolute shocker to his leading ladies, and many bad things have been said about Lars Von Trier, but I think they're both brilliant directors.)

Truly, I have nothing against Cyrus except that she was the wrong woman for this role.

reply

Are you a plant? I spend the whole movie wondering of the screenwriter had ever met another person much less any teenagers. And for the record, I've met teenagers. I used to be a teenager. There are people int he world like the people in this movie and those people have no friends because they're terrible people. You can get defensive about it if you like, but the only other movie I have ever seen that was so bad it made me mad was The Last Airbender.
