As a non-Canadian I like to sample the original tv shows of other countries and I have to say this show has been a hilarious trip which my whole family has enjoyed watching. I never watched Corner Gas, though I have considered tracking it down so I have no bias from that. The acting in this show isn't the best ever, but the way they deliver the lines and the writing has proven often laugh out loud material in my household. Maybe it's because I watch the show with my family that it makes it more enjoyable? Maybe I'm a little older than other viewers here (Late 30's)? I don't know, it just somehow works and as funny as I find the show my wife finds it even funnier. They don't push the envelope very much on risque content... maybe that's what many are missing... but I am sick and tired of all the comedies that are just filled with trashy content.
As for Canadian TV... This is GOLD. It's not the typical dirty joke after dirty joke as the only way to get a laugh... it's purely situational comedy. Nancy does a great job and though Emily Perkin's character was more annoying that good at first, as of the end of season 2 I found her to be funnier. I think the baby helps.
Other canadian originals? Dan for Mayor is funny, but it's not as funny as Hiccups. InSecurity was a great satire on the typical Spy shows. It's not comedy Gold, but it was fun to watch considering how they exploited the entire genre. My favorite of the bunch was Endgame which aired on Showcase. I think that show should get distribution in the US on A&E, TNT or USA. It fits in with the dramas on those networks very well. Too bad it looks like it won't see a second season.
