Who is considered anorexic?

I believe that we as a society have a completely warped idea of what is an adequate calorie intake.

I have just used one of the numerous online calculators for calorie intake http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm and these are my results:

Maintenance: 1466 Calories/day
Fat Loss: 1173 Calories/day
Extreme Fat Loss: 880 Calories/day

I bet that if someone saw me go through the day on 1300 calories they would say that I'm anorexic. Apparently, that's not even considered a weight loss diet.

Depends on how tall and/or skinny you are and how much you exercise. I tried the calculator and came up with very believable results for my height and weight. I'm guessing you're short or skinny or sedentary or all three.

Dang. Now I'm going to have to find another siggy.

reply

Oh, no, I do believe my results are very realistic. That is how much I eat anyway. Interestingly, I guess I'm not short since I can't wear petite sizes. I exercise 3 times a week. As for skinny, what does that mean? I'm skinny compared to the 2/3 of the population here. Believe me, you can't see my bones peaking anywhere.

What I'm miffed about is that most of the fat girls I've met would simultaneously want me to eat more and want to be me. I do not even wear the smallest size in any store I ever shopped.

It's just that to most people 1300 cal looks like I'm eating nothing. Hence my claim that we have unrealistic expectations regarding the amount of food we need to eat, leaning towards overestimate.

reply

Okay, I get you. By skinny I guess I mean somebody who has absolutely no business whatsoever being on the kind of "Extreme Fat Weightloss" diet that would require you to eat only 880 calories per day.

To get your calorie numbers and exercising 3 times a week, at 5'5" I'd have to weigh a mere 90 lbs. That would be scary thin for me. If you're not scary thin you've got to be a good deal shorter than me. If you're taller than 5' 2" you're not just skinny, you're very skinny. Depending on your natural tendencies, though you could just be plain skinny. My sister in law is 48 years old, about 5' 3", 90 lbs, and has no fat on her, but she is not anorexic as far as I know. She's not food or figure obsessed, is constantly active, has very good muscle tone, and often gets mistaken as her 23 year old son's girlfriend.

Dang. Now I'm going to have to find another siggy.

reply

I am, ahem, somewhat older than you. Slightly shorter too.

My point is that it's completely legitimate to have lower calorie requirements. It is not fair to assume that if one is not overweight, there is something wrong. Believe me, we are definitely going in that direction. My BMI is above 19, and although that is on the slim side, there is nothing wrong with it. Still, fat girls just assume that I'm constantly dieting and depriving myself (wrong) or that I'm bulimic (those who had dinner with me and saw me eating normal sized portions - what escaped their notice was that it was lean meat and salad that I was eating, not pasta Alfredo, and that's because I prefer that kind of food).

So you see, it's the other kind of discrimination that I have a huge issue with.

reply

LOL, fair enough. It hadn't occurred to me you might be older. At nearly 44, most folks I run into on IMDb are significantly younger than me.

It IS legitimate to have lower calorie requirements, and it IS sad that overfat has become the new average, but a 1300 calorie maintenance diet for a teenager would make me worry about anorexia.

Dang. Now I'm going to have to find another siggy.

Definitely agree with you LiliHarley. On all points.

The people that think 1300 calories makes you anorexic have very unhealthy food habits. I'm sure it seems like a tiny number when one McDonalds sandwich can easily be 400 calories. However if you get the right things 1300 can be a lot of food.

1300 can be a lot of food or a little bit, depending on what you eat. The healthier the food you eat, the more you'll get out of 1300 calories. If people eat crap, like fast food or fried foods - that 1300 calories will run out real fast.

Anyway, "maintenance" "fast loss" and "extreme fat loss" all depends on one's weight and/or how much they exercise.

reply

1300 calories is not much. Trust me. I dieted in college- 1600 calories a day with 1 hour of daily exercise. I was freaking hungry. And no, I did not eat crap.

reply

The maintenance intake was listed at around 1500, which is 3 meals of 500 calories a day. That is very manageable. Depending on her height 1300 really isn't that extreme. If you eat smart you can make those calories go a long way for example you can have a large spinach salad with 4oz of skinless chicken breast for about 250 calories (without dressing). That is a very filling meal. So at 1300 calories you can have 5 meals a day about the same size.

RIGHT...you have to factor in your age...also remember people have different metabolic rates....I had a friend in high school who ate all the time and whatever she wanted and she was not an exerciser.....she just naturally burned what she ate....my mother was the same way....she complained (WHATEVER) that she HAD to eat too much to keep from being a toothpick.

Anorexic to me is someone that obsesses over every calorie...it consumes a person...you don't always have to be severely under weight to be anorexic just like someone who is super skinny may NOT be anorexic....to me it is more about what you THINK than how much you eat.

reply

"Anorexic" means "thinner than me" to most people. Anything approaching a healthy weight is considered anorexic by the kind of fat people who are unwilling to change.

I don't think people would think you were anorexic if your 1300 calories was spent eating healthy, low-cal foods because you could eat a lot without going over your count.

This is amusing because the same thing at caloriecount.com (excellent place to keep track of your caloric intake as well as exercise says something completely different...please take note of the last paragraph for those of you getting under 1000 calories for extreme weight loss because that is really not healthy.

And yes, I am a fat ass although I am attempting to change that. :)

Anorexia nervosa is a mental illness. It is not about how much you eat or don't eat in a day.
