So Alistair's transgender?

That scene with him and the necklace... it was confusing to say the least.
What did you think?

it's quite possible, I love that character and how they've let him be different without it being some trashy and cliche focal point of the series. They've really done it well

Or just a femine guy. That scene felt wierd to me, I thought he was about to slash up his face or something. Or cut into his stomach.

reply

lol, so did I.

reply

Oh come on, they're not gonna have a guy cut off his winkie on a family show.

reply

well, I never thought about the winkie.. but I almost wondered about the slashing up part :p.. I wonder if next summmer he'll come back as a girl .. but I doubt his parents would let him do that. more likely femm guy.. *shrugs*

reply

I think he might be. In that scene I was so ready for him to put on makeup or something.

At first I thought that he was going to cut off his hair, to appear more guy-like-- because of his whole "impressing his parents with Becca persona...

But once he started cutting up his shirt... I think he might be...

reply

he's gay..

reply

he is right now, but he may be discovering that he feels he's in the wrong body. It's entirely plausable and I actually trust this show to tell a storyline like that with grace and dignity

I pretty much thought "Wow he makes a really pretty girl! I think he's a prettier girl than his sister!"

Its possible I thought that he might have been transgender. How he said Chloe got the toys he wanted, the toys that are more typical seen as girl toys, dolls/toy kitchens etc. Saying at one point he wants to be called Athena. It will be interesting to see where his character goes if they get another season.

reply

I kind of got that impression when he was talking to Piznarski. He didn't really think of himself as gay, maybe because he doesn't really think of himself as a guy. More as outside definition.

they haven't really come out and said he was gay, everyone's just making judgements. I think he's going to shop everyone and hook up with Becca. They both seem to be into the same things, and they seemed to connect in the Rune excersize.

Once I did wrong, I heard it ever, Twice I did right, I heard it never!

Transgender doesn't necessarily mean gay. It has to do with how you relate to your outward gender. There are gay men who are very much in tune with being men, and there are men who are attracted to women who do not feel at home in a man's body. Granted MOST people who are transgender would be considered either gay or bi, but not all.

I was thinking that perhaps he was born with both male and female reproductive parts, and his parents chose to have him be a boy (I have heard this is the easier way to go). He may be strongly connecting to his female side, and starting to feel like a girl trapped in a boy's body. I do know somebody that this happened to, and they are now a female.

Actually, it's easier to, "dig a hole than make a pole" so to speak. For years and years, and today even doctors still will, in question of gender, opt to raise a child as a girl. It's a lot more difficult to craft a penis than it is a vagina (which is why you see a lot more full bottom surgery on male to female transgendered people than on female to male transgendered people.) The most famous of these examples is the David Reimer case, where Dr. John Money, the leading psychologist on sex in his time was sought after to aid with a families great misfortune. During the circumcision of one of their twin boys, their son Bruce's (known as Brenda after) penis was burnt off. He became a she and literally was viewed as an experimental case study for almost his entire life. The experiment failed terribly and eventually after years of psychological scarring, Brenda Reimer had reconstructive surgery and became David. Sadly both twins committed suicide due to their immense psychological issues. I explained it rather poorly, but it's hard to sum up a life story in a few sentences.

Long story short, it is far easier to go from a male to a female, than a female to a male. However, we know very little about intersexed (hermaphrodite) individuals as there have been little study on the matter. So it is entirely possible that Alistair is intersexed, or it is entirely possible he is a healthy male who does not feel like a healthy male.

I thought the important part of that scene was that it was Trent's step-mother's necklace. Earlier in the episode she is looking around for it and can't find it. I think it's just more evidence that Alistair has a crush on Trent. But that's how I read it. It was pretty clear before that Alistair is gay but it was the Trent connection that jumped at me there.

Yeah but he found the necklace while cleaning, I didn’t get the impression that he knew it was Trents stepmothers. I think he thought it looked pretty and wanted to see what he would look like with it on.

reply

I was also thinking along the route that he is transgendered or maybe wondering if he is. Cutting up the shirt, having the long hair, putting on the necklace, it seems more like the actions of a transgendered than someone who is gay. I hope if they do go that way they keep it tactful as they have.
