The Calculus of Canceling TV Shows

Interesting article. adage.com/mediaworks/article?article_id=146313

LOL! Give it up! We're just not interested in your constant defense of FOX. Their behavior was $hitty, as it pretty much has been in the past, and there's nothing you can say or present to change some people's minds on that. I will assume that you work for FOX or something?

reply

No. I don't work for Fox.

I guess I should be here calling the 6 or 7 million people watching House who switched channels away from Lone Star to other shows stupid, morons, dimwits like so many here do? Acting like I got stabbed in the back because I had invested 2 whole effing hours in a show that got canceled that I paid nothing to watch?

Right.

I've seen less bitching and moaning on boards for lousy movies where people actually paid $$ to watch it, had to drive to get to it, and had to sit through nonsense previews and ads to see the film.

Sorry if you can't tell the difference between a little objectivity and being a shill.

As for Fox, I could care less about Fox or any other network. But this is a business, which few of you seem to recognize or, at least, want to acknowledge.

I posted that article so that people could read it and understand some of the considerations that go into a cancellation.

Fox canceled one of my favorite shows of all time. But no network that provides me with something free to begin with owes me anything else. If you think Fox owed you something, maybe you should get your entitlement attitude out of your head.

And what I really don't understand is why you people seem to think Fox wanted this show to fail. Essentially, that is what most of the complaints come down to. Do you really think Fox wanted to be in the position of canceling this show?

But I'll leave the board to you and your ilk. That way you and others can wallow in your disillusionment and mutual self-pity for all of the time and energy you invested in this show.

Edit: Just saw NBC has shut down production on Outlaw. Wander over to that board and compare what is said there with here.

-1 for "I could care less". I hate that phrase, 1. you mean "couldn't", even if you don't know it. 2. Nobody cares about cares of others, so the phrase is irrelevant. People deal in ideas, we can't trade emotions.

Good article. I already understood that networks have business decisions and the article clearly points that out. Thanks for the link!

That's a very good article, although it's more or less what I suspected was going on. It's the same reason "Drive" was killed a couple of years back after the first 2-3 episodes.

Again, what is strange is that they purposefully put this series in prime TV real estate (following House), thereby having pretty big expectations for its performance, and yet they spent zero money or effort building awareness about it before the pilot started. I'm pretty up on TV, and I didn't know anything about the show - cast, premise - until a few days before its pilot aired.
