John Voight

I'm surprised to see him doing TV.

He's 71 years old. He'll have to take whatever work he can get. Just like Rip Torn or Dennis Hopper (when he was alive). How many other actors in their seventies get a lot of theatrical roles? Nicholson, Freeman, Eastwood, Redford, Hoffman, Pacino, Duvall, Plummer, but not an awful lot of others.

reply

I guess you're right about his age contributing, though I think he still has good enough chops to only do movies if he wanted to. It's not like the roles aren't coming at all, but at his age I would think the slower pace would be welcomed.

Worth noting that he's gone into TV plenty of times before: the TV movies Noah's Ark, Uprising, Jasper, Texas John Paul II and The Five People You Meet in Heaven. His film career over the last 10 years hasn't exactly been impressive: he was good in Pride & Glory, The Manchurian Candidate, and Ali. That's about it.

reply

Don't forget '24.' He was one of the series' best villains.

reply

He's a very authoritative, entertaining actor and the reason I decided to watch this.

Gamer, was Mr. Voight any good on the show? I missed it. Thx.

Thank you dab6 for listing those. I saw none of them.

Yes but concidering that he was seen as a big star and dissappeared from Hollywood when he was in his prime with Oscar nom and Globe win(Runaway Train),it seems it didn´t matter what he did when he came back in Heat, ten years had passed. The reason he didn´t get billing and legends like DeNiro and Pacino does is cause it unfortunately reflects the audience view of the actor. You take the 2 names on the cover of Enemy of the state....the studio actually thought Less people would see the movie if they knew he was in it.A thing like that can turn a career around...WILL SMITH GENE HACKMAN JON VOIGHT for example.

Billed extremely low down in Pearl Harbor,as low as possible basically, despite delivering the films one good performance.AND Alec Baldwin...even Bay took a piss on him.

But still M:I,U-Turn,The General,Anaconda(intentional hilarious overacting)Enemy of the state,Ali,Pride and Glory,The rainmaker(Golden globe nommed),Rosewood,Ali,National treasure...not masterpieces but enjoyable films with several enjoyable performances. His resume post-Heat easily beats both Pacinos and DeNiros(Ok,that says nothing, none of them has been nominated for anything serious for 20 years moviewise and still get lead roles. Some can live on old resumes and others not.)...sad. He isn´t charismatic but unlike the two others he can still BECOME a character, which acting is mostly about. But give me the old Voight over the younger anyday,he was a bit overrated as a youngster,he needed to get ugly.

He made too many bad choices, career can´t recover. The end.

Alot of movie actors are moving into TV. With the studios making less movies and movies trending younger and more blow-em-up than substance if you want to work you take what you can get.

Last time I saw him interviewed it looked to me like JV had some face work done but he's full of wrinkles here. Wonder if they play them up for the role?

reply

An obvious comparison would be Martin Sheen. He had his best role other than Apocalypse Now on TV for 7 years.

reply

Let's remember that Voight was just on 24 a few seasons ago.

reply

He was on 24 in a Special Guest Star sort of role for about half the season. This is different.

But still, where'd the lighter fluid come from?

reply

John Voight is a wonderful actor and good for him to still being able to act.

reply

I appreciate his talent and that's why I questioned his choice to do television. People consider it a step down going from big budget movies to there.

I don't think its looked at as such a step down anymore, Twittertweet, considering how tight the budgets are in Hollywood - ppl are just happy to work. I'm sure Network shows are considering lower but look at the Emmy list this past year - Al Pacino did an HBO miniseries and tons of "A list" names.

Voight's presence in a TV show or movie is not a plus with me these days. He's to the right of Attila the Hun, and he was absolutely vicious about Obama during the last election. I wouldn't stay away just because he's on it, but my desire never to look at him again will remain a factor in my calculations.

The Republican Plan: repeal all reform; collect payoffs; go yachting (but not in the Gulf).
