Gun used on gunboat during river extraction?

Anyone know the type of gun? And also is that how they really sound or was that the Hollywood version?

reply

General Dynamics GAU-17/A Minigun and yes the weapon system really does sound that way

Thank ya kindly

reply

Of course it sounds that way. They were firing live ammunition, not blanks

Well that was an interesting comment:

What about ricochets? We'll give you a flak jacket & helmet; you'll be fine.

reply

Yeah, I loved that comment. I liked the bit just before that too.

Cinematographer: Why are we going to Stennis Mississippi?
Seal: Because it's a live fire range
Cinematographer: WHAT? What do you mean "live fire"?

In most films much of what you hear is an artificial construct created somewhere else at a different time, that's why I asked. It was a fascinating sound to me that I hadn't heard before.

I would say there was probably some sound editing in there. Its really difficult to capture accurate sounds of gunfire like this without a lot of distortion. How it sounds on video is never how it sounds if you are there. The 2 variables here are the sound was captured either in the SOCR or externally. I personally can see where they mixed the sources up on several occasions. Like a shot behind the Gunmounts in the boat that sounds like it came from 30 yards in front of the muzzle. I have many video's Ive shot with COTS Cams from Target or Walmart, that just can't handle capturing the sound of all the gunfire.

Ive heard it from behind the trigger and from afar. Its pretty close but, I think in order to not dumbfound the viewer, its not nearly as loud as it would sound if you were there.

Part of the utility of the Mini-Gun is not only the lethal firepower, its the psychological effect the sound of it firing has on the enemy. Its a force multiplier, literally. When you are outnumbered by the enemy greatly going in with a 2 or 4 boat detachment, you need overwhelming firepower and a few tricks to survive. Violence of Force includes the violence of the sound, which is often more than enough keep enemies down.

You're taking a dump and they call GQ do you pinch it off or finish your business?

That's the sound (plenty of vids of it on youtube etc), and having one of those turned on you at short range like that would be f'ing terrifying.

...then whoa, differences...

It just occurred to me that now would be a good time to use that line from Terminator 2: Judgement Day:

"THAT'S A DAMNED MINIGUN!"
