It is a sad ending, in the movie it doesn't make sense, as she seems totally willing to stay and give him a second chance. But he's practically grieving over the tiniest of situations to the point that he pushes her away onto the train. It's frustrating, because he brought everything on himself, due to his inexperience and awkwardness. He had the opportunity to not only sleep with her, but become her man, though he blew it because he was emotionally a wreck.
Despite the sad ending, I wasn't depressed or down afterward, but instead sort of grateful I'm not this pathetic. I'm not even a player by any standards, but he had ample opportunity, and I feel like its sort of a reflection of my past self at a very young age. Thing is, he could have had her, but didn't take her at the ending. Ah well, this tale mirrors reality all too well, leaving you confused, unsatisfied yet appreciative.
