SPOILERS Was Mizuki...

the Lunacy girl or just a fangirl?
The subtitles on the version I watched only stated that Mizuki "identified the 'Lunacy Murder Girl' as her other self".

I'm inclined to think she was just a fangirl, but I saw a couple people on this board stating she was the actual murderer.

I understood that she was just a fangirl

I thought she was a wannabee, but now I'm not so sure. I'm leaning towards thinking that she WAS the lunacy girl. Here are my reasons:

1. When the teacher relates the story about the Lunacy girl and says "Even if you kill someone, you're not going to be punished for it" the movie shows us someone typing on her phone or laptop "(Exactly. That's why I did it!)".

2. The movie tells us, "All she had to do was write a few remorseful words in a juvenile detention center and she was pronounced rehabilitated" which suggests she was released.

3. This a reason and an explanation. She refers to herself as the Lunacy girl. Shuya refers to her as a wannabee Lunacy girl. Which may be confusing, but remember he knows no better. The authorities would not release the name of a juvenile killer. That's part and parcel of them getting away with it.

I assumed she was a fan-girl but I'm also not so sure now. Your reasoning is pretty sound. But the teacher also says "earned her (the Lunacy Girl) Heroine Status among her peers," at the moment the teacher says that, the girl looks at her Lunacy tattoo on her wrist. Kinda indicating that she was one of those who worshiped Lunacy Girl as a hero.

But then the "That's why I did it." text at the end, when the teacher says they can get away with murder...hard to ignore that line.

I wonder how the book portrayed her....as of now, I'm leaning towards her being the Lunacy Girl.
