Well, it'll surely work if we'll get a good scriptwriter and director that can give justice to the material. I'd definitely want to see a remake/adaptation of the novel.(FYI The Departed was also a Hong Kong film remake and it got 4 Oscar wins and 1 nomination.)
Yuko Moriguchi(The Teacher) - Noomi Rapace
Shuya Watanabe(Student A) - Jack Glesson(Joffrey from Game of Thrones. Obvious choice, but I think he fits the bill perfectly)
Naoki Shimomura(Student B) - Devin Brochu(T.J. from Hesher)
Yoshiteru Terada(Yuko's replacement teacher) - Jim Sturgess
Yuko Shimomura (Naoki's mother)- Jennifer Ehle or Michelle Fairley
I agree plus it's a bit too complex and dark for the general USAian viewing public. Lack of explosions, guns, USA flags hoisted at some stage and no dumb broads twerking would kill a Hollywood remake lol

Those are the type of American/Hollywood movies that get shown in other countries and make loads of money, but there's an abundance of films every year that don't fit that description and they do very well and are highly acclaimed in the USA. The fact that other countries are only interested in seeing the Hollywood films with explosions, guns and dumb broads twerking means that those populations are the ones who are primarily interested in that type of film. Can't blame Hollywood for exploiting their love of explosions, guns, and women by making the movies in demand and taking their money ;)

The remake will be absolutely horrible. I'm usually excited for Hollywood to do better stuff with remakes (bigger budget, more convincing effects etc), but I just don't think they can get the mood and the atmosphere right with this.
It's all about style and mood with this film and replicating that won't work well. They'll just take the story which will then be toned down and try to play it straight. Can't be done that way.
Thumbs Up, Thumbs Down and a Wagging Finger of Shame
