Is Physical Intimidation and Violence More Common In Russian Workplaces?

It was scary enough to see how Sergey physically intimdated Pavel, but when he hit him upside the head while doing a work task up to Sergey's "standards" I started to get freaked out. Then Sergey basically forces Pavel to go with him to the sauna and then thrashes Pavels back as Pavel grimaces and screams out. Then the two scenes where Sergey shoots a loaded gun at Pavel. And no one else on the island to help, only hungry bears ready to chase you down.

Is all of this kind of physical abuse more acceptable in Russian workplaces than in other parts of the world?

It's a good question.

I just felt that Pavel had a bit of a self-masochistic streak in him and somehow didn't mind some of that sort of stuff being dished out to him. Perhaps another reason for not telling Sergei the contents of the message?

The thrashing in the sauna was not violence but is common in Russia - they beat each other with dried branches in the sauna because they believe it improves circulation.

The other part just seemed to me that Sergei was a very aggressive person and saw himself in sort of a fatherly role. This is not a typical "workplace" but almost seemed like a military job, so the smacking around wasn't too out of place. Sergei resented Pavel because he seemed to think he didn't care about what he was doing there during his internship and would rather play video games, while to Sergei the island played a central role in his life.
