Did i miss something??(spoilers)

Why did Sergiey try to hunt down and kill Pavel after he found out his family were dead??

Or was he just trying to scare him??

reply

No, after the klutzy way he was, at last, informed by the lazy, self centered weak boy who tried to shoot him, he obviously was not in a good humour and tried to scare the little twerp.
In fact this film is really about nothing and is as boring as the landscape which the cameraman films endlessly thinking that is "art".
Some of the suspense is well done but the rest is rubbish.
The script and storyline are full of holes so that anything the director was intending to mean or say doesn't happen or just gets lost.

I also came to the same conclusion.

The thing that did confuse me was the Isotope Vent.

I agree that Sergiey was trying to scare Pavel by the boat but I think the shot in the house was because even though he knew Pavel was there that perhaps he was jumpy because Pavel would not answer and Sergiey didn't know how much he scared Pavel and just assumed a polar bear was present.

Sergei shot in the house after Pavel stepped on some kind of lamp. The lamp broke, producing a loud "pop" sound that could also be mistaken for a gun shot, or "imagined" by Sergei, who himself was probably scared of Pavel to some extent.

Sergey never tried to 'hunt Pavel down'. When he first heard of the news about his family, he was in shock, so took a few steps towards Pavel, which Pavel mistook as an act of attack.

Pavel fired a shot at Sergey, which angered Sergey who in turn tried to scare him by firing a couple of shots towards Pavel. The first shot was intentionally close to him, and the second was into the air, to make Pavel realize how dangerous it could be. Sergey never expected Pavel would run away and really expect he was trying to kill him.

When Pavel does not return all night, Sergey goes out to look for him. When he is in the cabin on the cliff, he calls out for Pavel a few times, to which Pavel never responds. Instead he keeps quiet making creepy (glass breaking) noises. Sergey is cautious - it might be a bear - given the history of the cabin, especially since there is no response to his calls to Pavel. The sudden noise startles Sergey, and makes him shoot, which Pavel takes as a confirmation of his fear that Sergey is hunting him down.

The whole thing was a big misunderstanding.

People honestly thought that a gigantic polar bear climbed up all those steps, opened up the door and then maybe himself at home in the abandoned shack? Really?

Sergey started with verbal abuse, which escalated to psychological abuse. Then came the physical intimdation and then the outright physical abuse. The fifth stage was actually firing a loaded gun at Pavel, on two different occassions. I grew up in a family with a father who did all of these things except for firing a gun at his children. You spend most of your day walking on eggshells. You do everything you can to not upset the person who is psychologically unsound.

I couldn't believe when Sergey went looking for Pavel, who must have been hungry after being on his own. Not only did Sergey bring a GUN instead of FOOD, he shot blindly at Pavel. I would have been as scared as hell if I had been Pavel!

True, but idiotic Pavel had taken the first shot at him. I don't think Sergei was ever "hunting" him, rather than trying to communicate with him, albeit not necessarily utilizing his best negotiating skills. (You couldn't really picture him as a diplomat could you?)

As one of the other posters above mentioned it ended up as a series of escalating misunderstandings.

The pop of the breaking glass lamp was pretty damn loud. Could be mistaken for a gun shot. Pavel stepped on something that looked like a big fluorescent lamp. They can break pretty loudly.
