So why WAS the wife at the hotel????

It's didn't look to me like the wife and the other guy were actually having a full blown affair, though some people on this board seem to think she was already cheating on her husband. When the wife was at the restaurant having a conversation overheard by the brother, all she did was talk about her relationship. The other guy was playing the sympathetic ear (buying his time of course). Yes, they probably both wanted to have an affair, but it didn't sound like it had happened yet.

Then they were at the hotel and the guy was getting ice. When they broke into the hotel room, I saw no signs that a sexual encounter had taken place and nothing that made it look like they were going to start in the next 5 minutes. So then why was she at the hotel to begin with? I kept waiting for there to be some other explanation she would give as to why her and this guy were in the room.

Yes, you can say they were going to have sex, but it didn't remotely look like they were going to start. I know the movie is full of these inaccuracies, but I'm really curious as to what was going on in that room when it clearly didn't look like there was anything going on.

what was going on: plot development. But maybe a little forced.

I kind of got the idea they were just talking, the problem is we don't know anything about the guy. She said she was going to drop him off at his car, maybe he was staying in a hotel for the night, maybe he lives in another city further away and he asked her if she wanted to come up and talk some more. I didn't get the feeling they were already sleeping together either. The way the guy talked to her it seemed like he was desperate to say the right thing so that he could get in her pants, he didn't sound like someone who had already slept with her, if that makes sense.

she was on the bed when he opened the door, their clothes were on them like they wore it fast. also this entire conversion says she did.

it seemed to me like they were about to have sex but never got the chance to do it.

Seems to me like they were building up to some affair action and when she got caught she tried to turn it around on her husband.

I think either way, it's completely inappropriate for a grown man and a married women to be sneaking around, and hanging out in a hotel room in the middle of the day, with a bottle of champagne, especially when the husband doesn't know about it.

What do you mean "it didn't remotely look like they were going to start"? What should it look like? Whips and latex clothing? :)

Personally I think they were just getting started, and judging by what we know about both the characters personalities, they're probably not the kind of people who go at it hardcore style. A bottle of champagne in a hotel room without the husband knowing about it says it all.

This is yet another thread where my mind is blown by the OP. The whole set up was that they had not had sex yet and that is why they had their clothes on when the brothers barged in on them. That is why Steve had a bottle of champagne. They hadn't had sex together yet, have you?

BadCash has it right. They were people that knew that they were about to do something "wrong", and they were going to drink the bottle and get drunk and then screw.

Nobody checks into a hotel room to talk about life.

I don't think she had sex with that guy YET, but with the lunch and now the wine in the hotel room.....yeah it was going to happen. She was lonely and wanted someone to LISTEN. I am not saying she was in the right, she was not, but this is why some people cheat.

There was a brief shot of some object lying on the hotel bed. I thought it had some relevance to what they were doing in the room. But no explanation was given, and the object was not shown again. From the evidence at hand, we have to conclude that there was some affair-like situation in development.

Pat thought it was some weird sex toy lol. But I think it was just a tray for "breakfast in bed". It definitely did look suspicious hahaha

I think the whole point of the scene is to show that Jeff was right about the signs. If he hadn't shown up, Pat would probably not have busted and it would have happened or things would have gotten out of control.

But because Jeff followed the signs they narrowly avoided this disaster as well.
