Does anyone like the Archdeacon?

He has a very dry sense of humour and does tend to be hobnobbing with all and sundry but at heart he seems to have a strong moral sense as can be seen when he backs Adam's attempt to protect Colin against the need for extra cash from Darren's fanatical followers.

Aye he's hilarious!

His bits are amusing, but he's not my favorite. I think it's interesting that he will spend the rest of his life assuming he didn't get promoted to bishop because he's gay, rather than the truth. Someone states in that same episode that he'll never get it because of his personality.

He's actually a pretty good satire on people you can find in the CofE establishment - people who are so defined by the structures of CofE hierarchy they don't particularly like new ideas and play church politics rather than showing the love of Christ to all. I'm not sure he's meant to be likeable, but he is really funny. The episode with him suddenly being so charitable and eager to help is a good reminder that good actions can sometimes have selfish motivations.

Aside from Adam he's my next favorite character on the show.

I think he showed in the Easter episode a greater depth than we've seen before. Sure, the cynicism and awareness and readiness to play the internal power games of all institutionalised religions were all present.

But I think throughout we saw a more caring human side to him...going back to the gay marriage episode, although he can't thank Vicarage openly, I think he appreciates Vicarage's bravery in going against rules he professionally has to enforce, but, because of his own sexuality, privately abhors.

The fair way he approaches the enquiry and his report to the Bishop show that he thinks vicarage is essentially a good priest but out of his depth when it comes to the machinations of the church. The report could have been a hatchet job but it exonerates Vicarage.

Personally I think he's been a much more interesting character, less one-dimensional, since his sadness in his gayness came out.

So sad to see the last episode , I will miss this show , have enjoyed every one, can only hope Adam finds success.

I love the Archdeacon. Yes, he's a snob and can be aloof, but he is a very good person at heart.

I really grew to like him as the series progressed. His character had some wonderful lines, and his prayer in the cab during the last episode was wonderful. He truly is the most humble man he knows. He's really the best at it!

Yes, I like his character a lot though it took a while for him to grow on me. He's very funny and witty and lovably evil. Great actor, btw!

After a few episodes I started to feel the deacon was hard on the Adam to toughen him up to face the needs of the inner city church that Adam was assigned to. As others have already stated, he shows himself to be do what's right, even if it effects him negatively. I always look forward to him pouring the coffee offered him into the sink.
