Anyone get the Romeo and Juliet reference

R and Julie

reply

yes, there is also the balcony scene and the 'forbidden love' between the main characters

I thought when R got shot that Julie would get shot too and they both would die. But they went with a happy ending.

''If we can't live together, we're going to die alone!''

reply

Exactly the same here Esther, it just struck me at the balcony scene hehe.

Lovely film.

I actually envy people who didn't know about Romeo and Juliet when they saw the film, and got to realize it for themselves.

What did you imagine R's name to be?

... But, hey, why not make another 100 topics - regarding the question - constantly and perpetually; let's do it!! (ffs)

Well, that was me, I guess. I noticed one or two parallels early on and then at some point -- maybe the balcony -- I realized and thought, "Good lord, they're going whole hog on the R&J references!"

It was fun, but I don't think the movie needed it. I might have preferred they not have quite so many overt R&J references.

I only really realized that it was R and Julie at the balcony scene. Then everything started clicking.

That said, realizing it late meant that it didn't really color my expectations for much of the movie, and I enjoyed it more that way. It wasn't Oscar-worthy or anything, but it was weirdly fun.

reply

True love conquers all, guys. It was like Romeo and Juliet, but with a different message, and therefore, ending.

James Oglethorpe: Philanthropist by day, Philanderer by night

reply

also, Julie's friend is medically inclined so that is like Juliete's Nurse

reply

i recognized it right at the balcony scene, haha. Perry dying = Paris dying
Julie's friend wanting to be a NURSE
those references made the movie more entertaining in my opinion xD

reply

Balcony scene!! :D

reply

I didn't, but that's 'cause I'm an idiot when it comes to these things.

If you're happy and you know it, go sit in the corner and think about your life.

reply

Not immediately, but I realized it during the balcony scene.

Even blatant Shakespherian parallels couldn't help this flawed and dumbed down movie.

Perry was actually a reference to two characters, Tybalt and Paris. M could easily be both Mercutio and Benvolio. the Dad was like the Prince and Lord Capulet

reply

Also, Perry is portrayed by actor Dave Franco; in the 1996 version of R & J, Paris's first name is Dave. I couldn't resist mentioning this. LOL

reply

Yes. And there's also a strong element of "Beauty and the Beast" in this movie, too.

reply

Good observation about Beauty and the Beast.
