Misogynist tripe or a reflection of Korean society?

I mean if you're a woman in this film you're basically toast. Is it a portrayal of issues surrounding gender inequality in Korean culture or is this just another hyper-violent piece of torture porn for us hetero men to j*ck off over? Every woman in this film is pathetic and just a walking target; is this how Korean men see women? I mean the strongest female was the cannibal's girlfriend and only because she appeared to actually enjoy being raped and didn't dress like a secretary.

Plus Kim Soo-hyeon was a prick for letting Kyung-chul get away and commit more crimes. OK, so he didn't manage to murder anyone else but he was allowed to carry on raping.

Not a single likeable character in this film!

This is not a horror film, this is a 'Santini' film

Ummm, he ended up murdering the rest of his family, right after he sh!t out the pill..

So, you demonize an entire culture because of film. That's comparable to me watching "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" and thinking every American living in the South is a psychotic, chainsaw wielding maniac and that all college kids have the intellect of a five year old child.

Every woman is a walking target in a serial killer flick.

Kim isn't your usual protagonist. He's wounded. He's not thinking properly. He's outraged and blinded by vengeance. His actions are not justified, nor moral. This is what makes the film a stand out. It's not your usual "catch the bad guy" serial killer film. I thought it was shot brilliantly, and very well acted.

Oh no, does that mean I won't be on the much revered 'biggies [sic] babes' list? Oh know how will I live another day?

Lol, everyone on this board needs to chill out! I didn't find your original post to be offensive in any way, it was just an honest question. and I have no idea how the loons on here calling you a "feminazi" managed to figure out how to internet...

but yeah, while I get what your saying about the film, I think, because we are so hyperfocused on gender-roles right now as a society, any role where women arent kicking ass seems to be considered "sexist", forgetting that most of the men in these films, that arent the main characters, are all brutally murdered or tortured. But having characters killed off or tortured isnt sexist unless theres some appeal that the character is IN the situation due to some kind of inferiority stemming from gender.

I think if you look at the film, and Korean Revenge thrillers in general, you will find that any characters that are not the MAIN characters, regardless of gender, are goners lol. I do agree that there need to be more Korean revenge thrillers with women in starring roles though. Lady Vengeance and Mother are great examples of awesome movies that benefited from a strong female lead.

Thanks for a reasoned and well though out response. To be honest I enjoyed it at the start, and then the thought described in my original post just kept bugging me. I had to switch it off before the end because it kept bugging me.

A strong female lead adds a great dynamic. I'll have to check those two films you suggested, thanks!

you've seen hannibal lecter films rite? he eats his victims. the sick fk in devil rapes/kills, it doesn't depict sanity, or misogyny or the korean way of life.. it just depicts serial killers, the warped twisted minds that think it's okay to have a different set of rules and do whatever they want. if anything it depicts korea's love for revenge movies, i guess they must be salty over all the fighting with the north.

What the *beep* is wrong with you? You realize it's a movie, right? Or does your mighty women-defending brain can't even cope with that fact, huh?

reply

Like all SJWs he/she has to put a gender-related spin onto everything, otherwise they are completely unable to understand it. They've been so brainwashed in their gender studies classes, and by simpering Hollywood directors crowbarring a "kick-ass" female into every film released nowadays; that they think it's fact that one woman (black widow, Catwoman) can kick the 5hit out a room full of men who each outweigh her by 100 lbs. This is why they're surprised at the overpowered females in this film.

Great film. ultimate revenge. The killer preyed on women duh. Cool story.

women are easier targets than men, that's just a fact
