Since Oldboy is having it's remake now by Spike Lee. How about a US remake of this excellent movie?
I mean, I like this movie far better that Oldboy. Watched both movies on one day. But this one sticks with me the most. So, anyone else agree. This movie should get a US remake!
EDIT: Oh and since NEW (Spike Lee) Oldboy is getting bombed by reviewers for why making it. Let's get this one right! Because it's an excellent story! sure it's an revenge story, but one hell of a!!
Why should it get a remake? What new and unique qualities can a US remake bring to an already great movie? I don't get your reasoning for wanting a remake, please explain to me why you would want one.
Ryan Gosling should be casted as the main charcter. He's perfect for the role. Ryan is really good at playing the loner type character. As for the serial killer I think Robert Knepper would be a good choice. I liked how he played T-bag in Prison Break.
I wouldn't mind Gosling as main good character. His very much like Byung-hun Lee it seems.
As for Min-sik Choi.. I couldn't think of an actor who would want to play this type of role.
As for the remake, I'm usually not fussed about remakes, but this is one of, if not my all time favourite Asian film (along with Tale of Two Sisters) so, kinda really pisses me off
Mickey Rourke. I cannot shake the image of Rourke in an English version of this.
At 1st I was thinking Ryan Gosling as well, but what about Tom Hardy. There's only 2 main actors to be cast so that would help with the budget. Why remake it? Great Story and MONEY - isn't that the reason for everything?
It already bored me that nowadays the studios just keep doing remakes, sequels, prequels and reboots everyday without taking chances on original scripts and new ideas.
I could somehow understand if the remake of the original version could be a potential blockbuster cuz the studio is running a business and local cast might be more popular and recognizable. But for movies like this one, it won't get a PG-13 rating and the it doesn't draw mainstream audience. So basically it will be a very limit release no matter how you wanna remake it.
Then the question is, why would anyone remake it if it's just for artistic purpose, not making big money?
Well someone might say that since most Americans don't understand these foreign languages so remake will be more acceptable. But that is such a stupid idea cuz you don't see other countries remaking The Godfather just because it's in English. When it comes to a foreign movie, subtitles, voice dub and translation are gonna help you. Same with books and music written in foreign language.
That's not a very good analogy. Painters repainting the Mona Lisa would be a copy. The film equivalent would be a shot for shot remake (think Psycho 1998 or Funny Games US). You could compare a movie remake to the recurring usage of certain themes; like, let's say, a painting of the Crucifixion. Loads of different interpretations, yet they all depict the same story. It's a certain story that gets revisualised and not remade in the littlest of details.

Actually it's a wonderful analogy. Remakes are akin to creating the Mona Lisa using a paint-by-numbers format. They are made, exclusively, for people who have no artistic appreciation.
Holy Effing S word... Imagine Ryan Gosling as the main character and Javier Bardem as the serial killer, if someone like Iñárritu directed the remake also that would be INSANE, imagine the cinematography along with this story... I'm sad that this will never happen.
