He has a million bucks to spend.

Actually as a resident of Utah, he has about $573,800 (39.6% federal and 5% state income taxes, which are deductible from the federal taxes) to spend.

There's a piece on MarketWatch from last September that talks about what he planned to do with it:
How ‘American Ninja Warrior’ Isaac Caldiero will spend his $1 million prize

Though it’s more money than he’s ever seen, after taxes he won’t exactly be a millionaire, Caldiero notes. But other than the $3,000 he owes on his Subaru, he doesn’t really have any debt. So he plans to share his winnings with his family, replace the motor on his 1978 Dodge Jamboree RV, and invest the rest to support an ascetic lifestyle centered on traveling and climbing across the country with his girlfriend.

Not to mention the fact it's like 20 grand a year or some sh!t. He could probably live off that being a man of the land or whatever but most would have to still work.

It's best to read the fine print at the end of the show when it's going off. On top of the taxes he could be locked into one of those 30 year annuities like the winners of America's Got Talent. The net present value is definitely not a million if that's the case. And after taxes it'd be a lot less than half a million.

Like most of these reality shows, it's better to use the show as a springboard to increase your visibility and get endorsements elsewhere. I bet Kacy probably has a decent chunk of change and that happened without even getting anywhere near a Vegas finals buzzer.

Think of all the American Idol contestants who haven't won but likely have more than a million dollars. Lindsey Stirling from America's Got Talent has a very successful career and sells out shows around the world. She's worth more than the actual winner of her season or ANY season and she's not locked in to some Vegas stint.

That's a good plan.

Speaking of taxes, I learned on the Alone (2015) board (that show was set in Canada) that Canada does not tax game show winnings. On the other hand, if you become a professional as a result of the game show, then your income derived from that activity is taxable. Seems pretty reasonable, eh? 

How much do they win up there typically?

On that show, the prize was $500K. Both people that have won have been Americans, so they get taxed at the US rate.
