Suprised how unpopular this is...

I saw this in korea when it came out and can't understand the low ratings, i put this above saving private ryan, anyone agree?

reply

No, it wasn't that bad and I can understand that they were trying to give respect to the students who fought the North, but... It just wasn't fun. It was terrible but it wasn't good either imo. Above SPR?? no way..

reply

yeh maybe being better than SPR is taking it bit far, i watched them together after your comment, but taking the budgets into account of what they made with 70 mill for SPR compared to 10 Mill with this, just thinking they were a bit..dont know the word..got a bit more bank for your buck, spose this wont be big globally though

reply

Yea, I don't know it may have just been the mood that I was in but I just couldn't connect with this movie. This is of course entirely personal but it just didn't have an impact. You are right about the budget factor but I don't think that they could've done much more with more money if they stuck to the same idea. Actually, maybe they could've had actors that were, well, actors and that may have changed it but I think somewhere they seemed to fall short. I do see where you're coming from though. I am not saying that there wasn't a lot of emotion just that, well, compared to something like Saving Private Ryan, it falls extremely short. I mean with a situation/conflict that is so full of emotion as the N/S Korea conflicts I just feel it could've been more, well, less of a movie for profit. It didn't do that well in Korea either, not many people in Korea thought it was that great. BTW, why were you in Korea? Were you teaching English?

reply

Almost every movie is better than SPR. And this one is way better...

Sorry, I know that Saving Private Ryan had it's cheesy moments but this was a block of cheese to me.

It's hard to believe the North Koreans were as inept as they were shown here. Yes, I do realize that they did 'human wave' attacks and used bugles and flags to lead charges.

This film is beyond ridicalous. It's on par with all these silly Russian films about Russian Rambos in Chechnya. Hell, the final scenes were almost literally like that: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=35mMcYV_myY

It is the plot that is the issue, not the budget. You can't have people doing completely retarded things, even the enemy, and expect people to just willingly accept it just like that.

Tae Guk Gi is another Korean War film that is far better than Saving Private Ryan, guaranteed. However, it's not based on a real story like this one is... although the setting/plot and the realistic fictional story line can be portrayed more as the fact that they are all brothers in the sense that they are all Korean. Give Tae Guk Gi a watch. I haven't watched 71 Into the Fire but it looked good. Tae Guk Gi however makes Band of Brothers/Saving Private Ryan/The Pacific look like nothing. Oh, and be prepared to cry. I haven't seen one person that did not cry in this film.

reply

I think it would be unfair to compare BoB and The Pacific up against Tae Guk Gi or other war movies for that matter because those are mini series, and that is a different type of storytelling. As for SPR I agree that Tae Guk Gi is the better film. And I can verify the crying part :P
I just watched 71: Into the fire and it was totally worth the 2 hours I spent watching it. It's almost at Tae Guk Gi's level, but just almost. The storytelling in TGG is way better. But 71: Into the fire is definitely one to watch.
We need more Korean war movies, they know how to make them.

reply

Tae Guk Gi is a horrible and cheesie movie with a rambo-like character with a plot that does't make any sense at all. It is an insult to SPR to even pretend it's in the same league.

reply

OMFG, Taeguki is a total rip-off of SPR, and not even a very good one. And SPR wasn't even that good of a movie. But to say Taeguki is better is freaking hilarious. Taeguki was garbage. Only people who are going to cry watching that crap are stupid, easily manipulated nationalists and stupid people who were douches to their little brothers growing up. I think that movie made me roll my eyes about 20 times, it was trying so hard to make me cry. SPR only made me roll my eyes once or twice.

And Band of Brothers/The Pacific were heaps better than SPR, and as for taegukki, you shouldn't even be mentioning that tripe in the same sentence unless it is to demonstrate everything that is wrong with the movie. Jesus.

about 67 minutes in the movie, you can see a soldier running across the scene but then he magically disappears. at least they could have finished the digital effects. But the movie was good either way. 7/10

reply

I wanted to like it more than my 6/10 rating. It was just so overblown with slow motion and romantic music.

reply

Wow I can't believe how many people didn't like this movie! I just watched it last night and I balled my eyes out! I thought it was fantastic which is saying something since I'm not a huge fan of war movies in general, I find them too hard to watch. I also saw no comparisons to 'Saving Private Ryan' although I may be bias since I absolutely hate that movie. But anyway great movie and TOP's acting was amazing as always

they just fail to make the true event in well-dramatized, that's all. TaeGukKi is better and SavingPrivate Ryan is far better.
