So they just make cocaine and it's no problem?

They have a harvest celebration for their cocaine processing?

reply

they're making coco leaves not cocaine, which is used for lot of different things in other countries. Not sure if in show they ever said they use it to make cocaine

reply

Oh then why is Brenner making such a big deal about it? Because it COULD be used to make cocaine?

reply

I am not sure I think so unless I missed that they were using it to make it for cocaine. But it is a commonly grown plant there with many other purposes including medicinal purposes

reply

Oh yeah I know, which is why I assumed they were using it to make cocaine if Brenner was so against it

reply

Yes, it is used to make cocaine and that is why Lily has such problems with it.
They are not celebrating the cocaine, though, but the fact that they are bringing in a new harvest which will bring them food on the table.
We are supposed to see that life is not always black and white, especially not in those parts of the woods! The whole thing is wrong, because drugs will be made of the harvest, but on the other hand it's the money these people need to survive. As always the farmers aren't the ones making the big bucks.

Had I been told earlier that sharing a sense of humor was so vital, I could've avoided a lot of sex

I am thinking the family grows the leaves and then sells it - they know it will be used (mostly) for cocaine making and "shipped" around the world.
When your child is crying from hunger there isn't much you won't do to feed them.
I am with Lily - I don't agree but I understand.

Actually, Coca-Cola uses TONS of coca flavoring, made from coca leaves with the "cocaine" part extracted, which is processed is a plant specially approved by the FDA. So how is she to know? Maybe the coca leaves at Mateo's farm go towards Coca-Cola!

He's helping the whole world sing in perfect harmony!

#1: Her crying children are apparently all grown up and taking care of themselves now. One is even going to be a lawyer (I think that's what it was). So now she's just supporting herself. She could get by on another crop, but at the very least she shouldn't need the same amount of crop to sustain only herself. I'm not talking about making money. The whole argument was supposedly "feeding the children".

#2: For her 2 or 3 or 4 or whatever crying children, the cocaine made out of that innocent little leaf is killing hundreds of OTHER people's children. I don't feel a lot of sympathy.

Calling it innocent and touting all of its other non-cocaine uses is just putting on blinders. "Sure, SOME coca is used to make cocaine. But not OURS. No, ours is used for all of these great things."

reply

Not just crying children, but HUNGRY, crying children. No one forces other people's children to do cocaine. It is a choice. Mother's do not choose to have their children go hungry.
People could stop growing cocoa leaves but what impact would that have on the economies of the countries it is grown in?

reply

But the fact remains that those crying, hungry children are now grown up and feeding themselves. Not really an excuse anymore.

And are you really going to argue against ending the drug trade because of the effect it will have on the economy?

Thank you! Stopping the drug trade is something I am FOR, however, it WILL have major economic ramifications on the countries that grow it unless alternative work is available for the coca farmers. That most likely will mean training and education for many people and that costs money.
