The rich and famous could rebuild New Orleans

Does anyone know of great things being done in NO by rich and/or famous folk?

Spike Lee is one example. Making these docs is helping maintain awareness. Brad Pitt is rebuilding neighborhoods and Sean Penn is doing a lot, but how about other examples? I am curious.

Seeing what Brad Pitt did made me think about how the entire city of New Orleans could be rebuilt if the Michael Jordan’s, Tyler Perry’s, and Oprah’s of the world, rebuilt 50+ homes each. They can afford it and it wouldn’t even make a dent in their bank accounts.

Just imagine if 500 celebrities pledged to rebuild 50 homes. 25,000 homes would be rebuilt in NO. They could use the same formula Bradd Pitt used, to create well built, inexpensive housing.

Instead of Jay Z trying to buy the Nets (sports franchises usually are bad investments anyway) he could rebuild Charity Hospital. Heck, he could name it Hov Hospital while he’s at it. Lol.

Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have started a movement to donate half their multi-billion dollar fortunes to charity, and they are trying to get the other billionaires of the world to make the same pledge. If just one of those guys made those contributions to NO, they could rebuild the entire city.

exploitation of these people won't help that is what Spike Lee is doing.

Harry Connick Jr. that chick from ABC who are from there and basically alot of people who were raised there are helping.

I guess that you didn't read that there is a billionaires. There are 38 Billionaires who are donating half of their fortune. Oprah is one who isn't going to do it by the way.

How is it exploitation for Spike Lee to bring attention to their plight?

Ask the people of New Orleans if they feel exploited by Spike Lee. I doubt many of them would agree with you.

Well, actually I clearly stated in my OP that "Bill Gates and Warren Buffett have started a movement to donate half their multi-billion dollar fortunes to charity, and they are trying to get the other billionaires of the world to make the same pledge. If just one of those guys made those contributions to NO, they could rebuild the entire city."

"Why should rich people rebuild New Orleans? It's not their responsibility, after all."

Yes they have no responsibility. Just like if I saw you dying in a ditch, I don't have to give you a ride to the hospital. But I would choose to take you to the hospital because I have the ability to save your life. When 911 hit, people enlisted in the military to risk their own lives, in order to protect their fellow citizens. If they shared your mindset, they would have only thought of themselves because they have no responsibility to anyone.

"It appears as though the good concept of self-reliance is being thrown out of the window in favor of a policy of seeking assistance at the ends of other people's arms."

Self reliance? We are talking about the worst natural disaster in US history. Of course New Orleans needs the support of its country and fellow citizens. If everyone in your family had their homes destroyed by something outside of their control, would you be singing this same tune?

The nanny state? If an earthquake completely destroys your city tonight, and insurance companies refuse to replace the homes and/or businesses of everyone you know, please let me know what you would do about it since you are so self reliant. Go ahead and lie and pretend you would refuse assistance from your country and from philanthropic citizens.

You didn't answer my question. Gonna answer or continue to avoid?

Also, it does not matter how well you know your coverage if insurance companies refuse to pay out and find loop holes because they know that paying out will bankrupt them. You are obviously looking for anyway possible to blame the victims here. Do you also blame Jewish people for the Holocaust? Haitians for the earthquake? 911 victims? Not expecting you to answer those questions either of course. You'll take the easy way out again.

"I don't trust others enough to see to my welfare and upkeep the way the Katrina victims did."

Okay, once again I will ask the question that you are afraid to answer. How would you handle the situation of losing everything in an instant? Family dead, house destroyed, most relatives also devastated and unable to help you, insurance refusing to pay, city destroyed, car destroyed, place of work destroyed, and money gone.

Since you are so self reliant, would you refuse the boat ride to safety from volunteers and instead swim for miles, unsure where or when you will find dry land? Would you walk to another state in order to find a better life? Would you loot a grocery store to stave off the hunger from being trapped in the attic of your home for many days? Would you refuse temporary housing in a shelter, trailer, or sponsor family? Would you refuse free meals and wait until you can find a job and earn money to buy your own meal? How will you find a job without a decent set of clothes, a phone, or an address? Would you refuse clothing and other donations, and continue to wear the filthy soaked rags on your back? Would you refuse government money to rebuild your home, feed you, and pay bills (welfare)? Am I really supposed to believe you would be somewhere in the wilderness living off the land, hunting animals to survive, just to maintain some weird pride for not living off the help of others?

"I would never put myself or the ones I loved in a position where we would have to rely on others."

The point is you cannot always plan for tragedy. No matter how hard you try, something completely out of your control can devastate you in an instant, and leave you completely helpless. When this happens, there is nothing wrong with people helping the victims of tragedy, and there is nothing wrong with the victims wanting help.

If you live in California there is a risk of earthquake, Florida - Hurricanes, Texas - Tornados, Thailand - Tsunami, etc... Are all the residents of these places irresponsible, or do they realize that no matter where you live the unexpected can happen?

It is sad that you are taking such a judgmental view of the survivors of the worst natural disaster in US history.

Your argument is not grounded in common sense. It is delusional to believe that you are wiser than millions of residents of an entire city just because you live above sea level. Like I have already said, ANYWHERE you live in this world is vulnerable to some type of disaster. So I guess you need to move to the moon, since you refuse to live in unsafe places.

Feel free to respond, but I’m done with the back and forth with you. No sense in debating with someone heartless enough to blame millions of victims of the worst natural disaster in US history. I’m glad there are good people in this world that support their countrymen in their greatest hours of need, instead of pointing the finger at them.

Well said.

The biggest problem in our country right now appears to be this selfish mentality where everyone thinks they are special and others are not.

No one has to help anyone...

No one has to love anyone either...

but it is so emotionless to look at others in need and ignore it.

I see this emotionless in just about everyone in our country from the top down.

Its sad.

The best thing about 911 was... They had to ask people to stop sending water because so many people gave water from all around the country...

people got in their trucks to drive from california to NY to care about people they never met...

Yeah no one has to help anyone... but when you do.... you're beautiful.

Thanks to all who keep trying.

BTW. I'm a new yorker and lived through 9/11... I lived through the days where you couldnt walk around the city without seeing photos of missing people taped up on every inch of walls as you walked through subways and streets.... Walking through the city in those times would be so difficult... fighting back tears... trying not to cry at all of the faces...

How could you not want to help people who need it?

That sounds nice in an ideal world. But most of the celebrities clearly don't give a sh*it.
