I can't imagine that this is shown on regular Australian broadcast television, like any old sitcom or something, what with all the cursing and f@cking. Is this on some Aussie equivalent of HBO or Netflix or whatever?

Are you American? Not being rude but it is classified as an M rated show so can actually be shown at 7.30.

Don't worry, not insulted at all. We've got 99 problems in this country, and this is just one.
We have a similar rating here, and if the broadcast networks (also ABC here, but we have NBC, CBS, FOX as well) wanted to, they possibly could broadcast this here. But, they are far, far too concerned about offending commercial advertisers - and more importantly the conservative right wing in this country.
Don't the conservatives in your country get up in arms over programming like this?

We pay for the ABC, not like the British but it is paid for by our taxes. The ABC has an older demographic and no ADS!
They make some of the best TV, commercial TV on the other hand is soap and not worth bothering with!
The funny thing is most American shows are relegated to secondary channels as few people want to watch. The thing that makes me smile is on American shows you can shoot the s**t out of anyone or thing but heaven forbid someone swears or shows a nipple or buttock!

I don't think I know any conservatives, and as i said, the ABC is paid for with our tax dollars, so you can make a complaint. So long as it falls within the guidelines set out it could be shown at 7.30

I'm a conservative American and I think Rake is one of the best shows on TV right now. I also love Upper Middle Bogan (sorry if this contradicts your view that all conservatives are xenophobes) and expect that the scheduled remake on US OTA TV will neuter the Amber character just as they did to Cleave.
Isn't Cleave a Tory(sp)? There is the scene with the birthday party pirate where he gives his views on all the parties, IIRC. I think conservatives would be OK with Rake because he buys the ticket and then takes the ride, he does the crime and then the time. Rake is on track to become a great political show, though none will ever approach my old favorite Yes, Minister, the greatest of them all.
