'...but she's sensitive about the L-word.'

Sheriff: And these must be the lawyers.

Ben: Guilty as charged. I'm Ben Grogan, attorney for the developer. And this is Miss Reed, but, she's sensitive about the L-word.

Can we hang a lantern on it?
This is a blunt reference to a previous series with Sarah Shahi as part of the cast. (For those that didn't realize it, or haven't used the IMDB to look up the actress yet.)

What was the point to this?
It actually made sense in the History Channel's "History Bee" to include a question about 'What was the 1980's TV-series that featured the cliff-hanger "Who shot J.R.?"', and it stumped all of the teen-age contestants. That was a plug for the new Dallas Series. But what was this reference to The L-Word about? Maybe a foreshadowing of things to come for Kate and Lauren?

Anyone?

It fit with the dialog, carried a double-meaning within the show (Kate is afraid of love), and is probably a little inside joke between the writers and Sarah since I'm sure everyone is always harping on her love scenes in The L Word (evidenced by your and everyone's imagining of a Kate/Lauren thing). And it's something for fans to pick up on as well. So it was just a bit of fun but I don't think there is anything else to it.

Also the victim's name in this case was Carmen which was her character's name in The L Word.

Actually if you count the "love" word, it would have a triple meaning, *smile*.

Hmmm, Carmen de la Pica Morales, I hadn't caught the victim's name match.

Maybe it is just an inside joke thing, or a poor attempt to increase the audience by planting trivia references in the episodes. I just saw CHICAGO on TV recently, and one of the character names was Sophie Devereaux, which is a name used for a main character in LEVERAGE(2008). It's hard to believe there isn't something more than an accident when unusual names are in multiple shows, (although Carmen isn't really unusual).

Or,
When the Bob Newhart Show was airing, it turned into a drinking game. Every time someone said "Hi Bob", was a drink. And there were plenty of drinks flying back in those days... Just use the trivia references instead... nahhhh

The L word Ben was talking about is "Lawyer." Haven't you guys been watching the show? There was an earlier reference to lawyers while they were flying out to Tahoe. Ben was explaining what a special master was, and Kate said she knew because she went to law school. Ben said he wouldn't tell anyone.
