Exactly. He hit the nail on the head with that. None of them "deserved" a chance to play for 250,000 extra dollars that they didn't need. Obviously they were all getting by just fine before the show without a padded bank account. Winning it would have been a nice addition to their lives, sure, but it's not like anyone's world is going to crumble around them because they didn't win $250,000.
shareKalon is exactly right. When you play a game, no matter what venue it is, no one "deserves" anything. Except that everyone play by the same rules.
The $250,000 is a prize won by whoever wins it, within the boundaries of the game. It doesn't have to go to the person who needs the money the most, or wants it as a consolation for having been screwed over some way in the past.
That is what charity is for.
