shareDespite RISE OF COBRA's box office success, it's reception was more lukewarm. They decided RETALIATION would be a loose reboot. Fan favorite characters from the original would return, as well as focusing the story on bringing closure to the original's huge cliffhanger ending. Many actors either didn't want to come back, or weren't asked. Channing Tatum was being written out because a lot of fans can't stand him as Duke, but then the actor became really popular almost overnight, and had additional scenes filmed. The character's fate is debatable I think.
I would like a third film bringing these characters together, but at this point that's unlikely to happen. I also wouldn't mind a TRANSFORMERS crossover, if it doesn't disrupt any possible Quintesson/Unicron story lines.

I think the death of Duke is related also to the way they portrayed Baroness in the first movie. When the filme ended with her being good, they ended up with a plot wise bomb in their heads. How to go with Baroness like that? By killing Duke, they can cut all strings to Ana Lewis and don't have to mention her again.

Killing Duke was a big mistake. He's the reason I watch G.I. Joe even in the cartoons. When they did they G.I.Joe movie I didn't like it when he was mortally wounded. At first I thought he didn't survive but in the end they received word that he recovered. I wish they can bring him back if they make another movie.
