NBC pulls Chase from Schedule

http://insidetv.ew.com/2011/02/03/chase-cancelle/

I really enjoyed this show. I wonder if they will air any other episodes like with other shows that have been cancelled.

reply

Of course, NBC never gave this show a chance. Knew this gonna happen though, especially after Amaury's tweet, last week. Was hoping the announcement wouldn't come until after the episodes finished airing.

reply

Never gave it a chance? It's more like the viewers gave it a chance and then left...it's the lowest rated show on NBC, which is the lowest rated of the four big networks.

What do you expect them to do when a show draws almost no viewers and then starts losing the few viewers it does have?

reply

The ratings had started to improve. Still dismal, but improving, as were the quality of the story lines.

In the past there have been shows which were ignored during their first season or considered a bust but networks stuck with them, gave them some interesting programming (such as featuring new episodes during summer rerun time), moved them to better time slots (instead of worse ones), etc.

Now it's 2-6 shows to find an audience and then out.

Of course, I am sure I am oversimplifying. There are production costs to consider, whether the cast and crew want to keep going, whether the producer (Bruckheimer, in this case) wants to hang in there swinging.

None the less, I think it's arguable whether NBC gave it a chance or not, but they didn't act in an unusual manner, for sure.

reply

The ratings had started to improve.

Not at all. When it came back, the 2 episodes that aired on Wednesdays had 1.0 and 1.2 ratings, or something very close. When NBC saw that, they knew that they had to yank it. Granted, it didn't stand much of a chance in its time slot against strong competition, but none of the big 4 networks are going to put up with those types of #'s for long during the middle of the week. Maybe if it got those same ratings on say a Friday night, I believe that NBC would've gave it more leniency and aired the other 4 or 5 episodes.

reply

The article I read said that it had improved. Maybe they meant the one week improvement from Jan 20 to Jan 27, but the numbers did go up.

Still dismal - sure. I'll grant you that. But the move opposite Idol was intended to kill the show off anyway, not give it another chance.

But two hours of a freaking game show? I won't be watching.

Yet one more reason why I seldom watch broadcast TV any longer. NCIS and Glee are the only two I make an effort for, although I occasionally download the new Hawaii Five-0 (since I was living in Africa, I took my entertainment where I could get it).

I guess it's back to cable series for me. Screw NBC.

reply

When was the article written? I believe that when it was still on Mondays, the last couple weeks had improved a little bit but when it came back, it got it's worst ratings yet.

reply

Its ONE big freaking political game behind the scenes...I don't trust any of the execs at any network bc all they want is stupid ass shows like reality and game shows...Bruckheimer shows ALWAYS don't get a chance, its like they toy w/his shows and then cancel them w/o giving it a chance....Wish USA Network would pick it up.

reply

You could film a monkey throwing *beep* at the wall and it would be more intelligent than a Bruckheimer production.

reply

I'm really starting to hate american networks!!! What's up with all this cancelling?!! I'm almost to scared to follow new shows. There's this new show coming out in march, it's called Breakout Kings. I'm really looking forward to this, but who knows...if the ratings are not to the studios likings, they might cancel it without giving it a real chance.

reply

Do what I do, don't start watching new shows until the ratings for at least three weeks are in, go to TVBYTHENUMBERS.COM and if the ratings are decent, then start watching the show, thats what I do.

This store is cool! It's huge with all the young people, I mean, all the us!- Jenna Marooney

NBC should rename itself “Nothing But Cancelations.” Now I know why I never got into shows till the second season. These networks pull out faster than a virgin.

And they are replacing it with two hours of game show?

Well, those of us who liked the show are going to have to pay for NBC's ineptness.

What was Amaury's tweet? (I refuse to use Twitter.)

reply

"It's been a amazing ride, working with a great group of actors and writers"

A cancellation was what I got from that, maybe I was reading too into it, but...
Two hours of minute to win it would be overkill and kind of ridiculous, the remaining episodes have been filmed, they should just air those.

Was just about to start watching, well that does it for me then.

I like a good cigar...and a bad woman...-Duke Nukem

reply

I am not a happy bunny! Sure the show had a slow start but 'twas getting better. Even so, 'twas still better than some shows now into their 7th or more season. :-(

reply

Well, I am bummed. I can't stand to even look at that game show host. let alone watch it. I certainly will have my tv on another channel that night until SVU.

reply

This Wednesday, I'll have it on the finale of Human Target and every week after that, it'll be on Criminal Minds until 10 (unless it's a rerun of course), when Justified comes on.

reply

I liked the show but I didn't like the Annie Frost character, I think it would have ben a better show if the female lead wasn't portrayed as a superwoman

I am broke, I spent my money on fast cars, guns, and ammo, they rest my money was wasted

I can understand not liking the show and not wishing to watch it. And you have the right to your opinion that it sucked, or was lifeless, as I believe you put it.

But even so, why would you thank NBC for pulling it? If other people liked it, why would you care if they left it on for other people to watch?

Does it somehow offend you if a show that you don't like is allowed to remain on the air? And if so, why?

And please don't say something like the "So the timeslot or resources could be put to better use." There are too many time slots and resources available for that argument to be valid.

reply

[deleted]

Well, first off, they alreayd pulled the show so my thanking them won't make a damn bit of difference.

It would not have made a difference even if the show had not been canceled.

So untwist your panties.

I don't wear panties, and I thought my response was reasonable.

Second, I'm thanking them because now they may air a new and better show I might want to watch.

Well, it's good to know you are the end-all and be-all of the TV viewing public. It's good to know that I have finally met the one person who matters.

No there isn't. Not sure if you noticed, but those other slots aren't running a blank screen waiting for a show to magically appear. They have shows (most pure crap) airing in them.

So, on the one hand you tell me I'm wrong and then you tell me I'm right. I'm confused.

And they pulled Chase to air two hours of a game show. Please tell me you don't think that's a better use of ANY time slot.

reply

Oh yes, in responding to your other petty points, I forgot this one.

Or are you saying it's all right to cancel other people's shows, but not the ones YOU like? Hypocrite.

There are shows already canceled and shows which are ending their runs. This happens a lot, if not constantly. So there are always time slots available the following season.

However, if you insist on calling me a hypocrite, then I am forced to quote Walt Whitman in the "Song of Myself"

Do I contradict myself?
Very well then I contradict myself,
(I am large, I contain multitudes.)

You know, my first post was just asking a question about a mindset. You decided to turn it into an argument.

reply

This news does not really surprise me due of a number of factors. I have no vested interest, either way, so I'm not here to complain or gloat.

I tried the show for three episodes, I believe, and then gave up on it (I never fully judge a show by the pilot alone). Personally, I usually prefer television serialized, and the drama was just not there (probably because the story was over in 42 minutes). There are plenty of other one-and-done type of shows that just do it better honestly. I actually like many of the actors in the principle cast, too, yet something just did not mesh right for this show. I can't really pinpoint it. It is just how I feel about it.

Lastly, whoever at NBC decided to put this up against a pretty successful show in ABC's "Castle" and CBS's reboot of "Hawaii 5-0" in the 10pm Monday timeslot needs to remove their head from their rear end.
