US vs UK ....

I haven't seen this US version, but just finished the UK ones. I'm curious, can someone tell me...

- the UK ones had a woman in charge of a homicide investigation because that was new, and allowed sexism, role-reversal, working-for-a-woman conflict. The UK version was in 1991 when this was something fresh (-ish: the 'making of' said that it was still still five years late in reality, but the first cop show to show it on TV). So - do these themes go through to the US version? Women in charge of men isn't as new in 2012 as it was in 1991?

- the UK ones were based on reminiscences of an actual female DCI. Were the US ones similar?
