I can already tell that Brett Cullen's character should have been played by Chris Cooper

No, you just confused him with Chris Cooper. I haven't seen the movie yet so I can't comment. I can say from prior performances, Cullen can make you like him, where Cooper almost always comes off like a grumpy A-hole. So I don't know yet what the movie needs.
